Cristiano Ronaldo’s turbulent second spell at Manchester United could have taken a dramatic turn in 2022. For a brief moment, a route out of Old Trafford opened up that led straight to Stamford Bridge.

Todd Boehly wanted it. Thomas Tuchel absolutely did not.

During his first transfer window in charge at Chelsea, the American owner — who was also acting as sporting director — sat down with super-agent Jorge Mendes. Ronaldo, then 37 and deeply unhappy at a United side that had just finished sixth in the Premier League, was on the table.

The idea appealed to Boehly. A global superstar, a proven goalscorer, a statement signing for a new regime in London. From a business and branding perspective, the move almost sold itself. Chelsea needed firepower, Ronaldo wanted out, and the club’s new hierarchy sensed an opening.

But the football side told a different story.

According to The Athletic, Tuchel made it repeatedly and unmistakably clear that he did not want Ronaldo. The German coach, who had lifted the Champions League with Chelsea only a year earlier, opposed the transfer on several occasions and stood firm against the push to bring the Portuguese forward to west London.

The power struggle ended with a simple outcome: no deal. Boehly’s curiosity and ambition met Tuchel’s tactical conviction, and the manager won that argument.

Ronaldo stayed at United a little longer, his second stint eventually collapsing in acrimony, before he left for Al Nassr. Chelsea moved on without him, and the sight of CR7 in blue at Stamford Bridge remained nothing more than a what-if from a chaotic summer.
