Richarlison's Dream to Play for Vasco Denied by Spurs

Richarlison has laid bare his frustration after a dream return to Vasco da Gama collapsed, insisting Tottenham blocked the move despite his determination to head back to Rio.

Speaking directly to Vasco fans in an emotional Instagram video, the Brazil international said he turned down other opportunities to try to force through a short-term switch to São Januário.

“Other offers were made to me but I made it very clear I wanted to join Vasco until December,” Richarlison said. “Unfortunately, Tottenham set a limit on the loan, which is why it didn’t work out.”

The forward didn’t hide what the club means to him.

“I think I’ll be at Sao Januario soon, and in Barreira, and you know how fond I am of you all,” he continued. “One day I’m going to make this dream come true; it’s my dream, my grandfather’s dream, and my family’s dream. I’m speaking from the heart here because I really wanted to play for Vasco.”

For now, that dream is on hold – and his reality in north London looks bleak.

Last season, Richarlison was Tottenham’s top scorer in the Premier League, hitting 11 goals and playing a major part in steering the club away from a shock relegation fight. He carried their attacking burden when it mattered most.

This season, he has been frozen out.

Despite his contribution, the 27-year-old has been left out of Spurs’ Premier League squad entirely for the current campaign. The arrival of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City has pushed him even further down the pecking order, underlining how far his status has fallen in just a few months.

So far, his league involvement amounts to just one appearance: the heavy 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend. Since then, nothing.

Richarlison is now into the final 12 months of the five-year deal he signed when he joined Spurs from Everton in 2022. His heart is in Rio, his contract is in London, and time is running out for both club and player to decide how this story ends.
