Real Madrid Unveils Record Signing Yan Diomandé Ahead of Schalke Friendly
Real Madrid welcome back their stars – and unveil a record signing – in Germany on the eve of the new season. José Mourinho’s squad list for tomorrow’s friendly against Schalke has a very different feel to it, and not just because of the names returning from the treatment room.
Mbappé, Bellingham and Courtois are back on board. So is the sense that this is no routine August kickabout.
Diomandé steps into the spotlight
The headline is clear: Yan Diomandé is in. The Ivorian defender, now the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history, has been called up for the first time and is expected to pull on the shirt in Gelsenkirchen.
This is the first real glimpse of what the club have paid for. How quickly he understands his new teammates, how he copes with the defensive line’s movements, how bold he is when he steps out with the ball. Those questions start to get answers against Schalke.
His attacking contribution will be watched just as closely. With the possibility of him sharing the pitch with Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, the temptation to drive forward and join the play will be strong. For a club that has just broken its own transfer record for him, every touch will be scrutinised.
Big guns return, others stay behind
The squad list also restores some heavyweight names. Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Thibaut Courtois all make the trip and rejoin Mourinho’s plans for what doubles as a dress rehearsal for the competitive campaign.
For Mbappé, this is his first friendly outing of the summer. The Frenchman now has a single game to tune up before Espanyol on 22 August, a rare but intriguing scenario for a player used to carrying attacks from day one.
Not everyone travels. Endrick remains in Madrid, placed on a tailored programme designed to protect him from injury risk at this stage of his adaptation. The club have chosen caution over spectacle with the young forward.
Aurélien Tchouaméni is also out, sidelined by a severe thigh strain that rules him out of the final warm-up. He joins the list of long-term absentees that still shadows Mourinho’s planning: Éder Militão, Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio all continue their recovery and will not feature.
Mourinho sharpens his first XI
Strip away the “friendly” label and the Schalke fixture carries serious weight. This is Real Madrid’s last rehearsal before the curtain goes up against Espanyol, and Mourinho knows it.
He wants minutes in the legs, yes, but also clarity. The shape he trusts, the hierarchy in key positions, the chemistry between new arrivals and established leaders – all of that is in play in Germany.
The defensive line is under the brightest spotlight. This could be the night Mourinho rolls out the back four he intends to use in the league opener. Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konaté have complicated the picture with strong pre-season performances, forcing their way into the manager’s thinking.
Konaté, in particular, has turned the battle for the centre-back slot into a straight duel with Dean Huijsen. Every intervention, every duel, every line stepped up or dropped deep will feed into Mourinho’s decision.
On the right flank, the contest is no less fierce. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries are locked in a fight for the starting role, with the Dutchman having made a powerful case since arriving. Schalke offers one more 90-minute argument for both.
One game left, several positions still in play, a record signing under the microscope. For a pre-season friendly, there will be nowhere to hide.
