Real Madrid TV Criticizes Referee Over Mbappé Penalty Incident
The new La Liga season barely has a pulse, and already one incident has detonated into a full-blown storm.
Real Madrid’s official television channel has launched a fierce attack on the officiating team after Kylian Mbappé’s stoppage-time penalty miss against Real Betis was allowed to stand, insisting the spot-kick should have been retaken.
A disallowed goal, then chaos in the 94th minute
The tension had been building long before the 94th minute in Seville.
Carlos Espi thought he had dragged Real Madrid level, only to see his goal ruled out. Minutes later came the flashpoint that has dominated the opening rounds of La Liga: Mbappé on the spot, deep into stoppage time, with Madrid chasing an equaliser.
The French forward’s effort was saved by the Betis goalkeeper. As the rebound was cleared, Madrid players immediately turned away from the ball and towards the referee, surrounding him and demanding the penalty be retaken.
Their argument was simple: a Betis defender had encroached into the area before Mbappé struck the ball.
The referee waved them away, signalling that it was a matter of interpretation. No VAR intervention, no second chance. Moments later, the whistle went. Real Betis 1–0 Real Madrid. And the real row began.
Real Madrid TV: “Technical error” and “contradiction”
Real Madrid’s television channel did not hold back in its post-match analysis.
It showed replays claiming a Betis defender had his right foot on the penalty area line at the exact moment Mbappé hit the ball, then stepped fully inside the box and directly influenced the play. The channel also highlighted Héctor Bellerín, arguing he too had one foot touching the line when the kick was taken.
Under the letter of the law, that, they insisted, should have been enough to order a retake.
The language was blistering. The decision was described as “a contradiction from the referee” and labelled “a technical error”, with the channel expressing astonishment “that a referee does not know his own regulations”.
The criticism went further, hinting at perceived double standards in Spain’s title race. The broadcast claimed that “had this happened with Barcelona, the penalty would have been retaken, and had Espi’s goal been for Barcelona, perhaps it would not have been disallowed”.
Oversight or incompetence, the channel argued, lay at the heart of the call. In its breakdown, it stated that the foul committed during the taking of the penalty “was not awarded, whether due to oversight or incompetence”.
Clash of interpretations
From the refereeing team’s side, the defence was clear: Marc Bartra did not step on the penalty area line. For them, that meant no infringement, no encroachment worth punishing, and no reason to bring Mbappé back to the spot.
Real Madrid’s channel rejected that outright. Even if Bartra never actually touched the line, it argued, he charged forward early and intervened directly in the play, which in their view still breached the rules and affected the outcome of the penalty.
One missed kick, one waved-away protest, and a 1–0 defeat have now become one of the defining controversies of the season’s opening weeks. And with Real Madrid’s own channel publicly questioning whether this was simple oversight or something deeper, the debate around refereeing standards in La Liga is only just warming up.
