For a club that has just hired Jose Mourinho and ripped into the market with six major signings, it’s a decisive pause.

Mourinho’s rebuild, already done

The first big arrival of the summer was Mourinho himself, returning to the Bernabeu spotlight and immediately reshaping the squad.

Then came the flood.

Real Madrid moved for World Cup winner Marc Cucurella, brought in Ibrahima Konate to reinforce the back line, added Bernardo Silva’s creativity, and secured Denzel Dumfries to power the flanks. The headline act, though, was always going to be Yan Diomande.

At 19, the Ivorian winger has already smashed a club record. His transfer, worth €140 million including add-ons, makes him the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history. A teenager now carries the weight of a galactico fee.

The club also slipped one more name through the door on Monday: 19-year-old midfielder Sergio Martinez from Racing Santander. He will start with Castilla, not the first team, but his arrival underlines the long-term planning beneath the marquee deals.

And yet, for all that movement, there were still gaps Mourinho wanted to fill.

Targets missed, plans adjusted

Real Madrid pushed for a top midfielder. Their priority was Rodri, a player seen as the ideal anchor for Mourinho’s structure. He chose FC Barcelona instead, a stinging blow given the rivalry and the strategic importance of the position.

At centre-back, Mourinho wanted a left-footed option to balance his defence. Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni sat at the top of that list. Talks never turned into a deal. The idea faded, the clock ticked on, and now the window is about to shut with no new defender through the door.

The pressure to react late, to chase one more big name, is something Real Madrid know better than most. This time, they are walking away from it. With one day left, the club has decided the squad is set.

Doors still ajar for exits

The story is different on the way out.
