Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a line under his formal involvement in the club’s boardroom while remaining tied to the project as a co-owner.

The 42-year-old, a key figure in data-driven football operations over the past decade, will now take a step back from day-to-day duties at the Championship side. His influence at St Mary’s had already reduced in recent seasons as his responsibilities grew elsewhere.

Ankersen has been serving as president of Turkish club Goztepe, another team within the Sport Republic portfolio, which naturally pulled his focus away from Southampton. Even with that shift, he stayed plugged into the club’s recruitment work, a department where his reputation was forged.

Before arriving at Southampton, Ankersen played a central role in Brentford’s rise. Between 2015 and 2021 he helped shape the Bees’ strategy in a period that culminated in promotion to the Premier League, a landmark moment that cemented his status as one of the most influential backroom operators in English football.

Sport Republic, the investment vehicle behind Southampton, is owned by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, who holds the majority stake in the club. The group has steadily built a multi-club model, also controlling French side Valenciennes and Goztepe in Turkey.

Valenciennes sit under the same umbrella, while Goztepe are currently bottom of the Turkish Super Lig, a stark reminder of the scale of the challenge facing the wider project.
