Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Nitrous Oxide Possession

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide following a late-night crash on the M3 in May.

Police confirmed the former England winger will appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September to answer three charges arising from the incident in Hampshire on 28 May, 2026.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman told BBC News: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.

“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.

The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange [Hampshire], on 28 May, 2026.

No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.

The collision took place near the southern coast of England and involved only Sterling’s car, with no other motorists hurt.

It marks a stark off-field twist for a player who, at his peak, carried England through some of their biggest modern tournaments. Sterling has 82 caps and 20 goals for the Three Lions, playing a central role in the run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.

At club level, he has worn the shirts of some of England’s most powerful sides. Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal have all built attacks around his pace and direct running at various points in a career that once made him one of Europe’s most feared wide forwards.

Right now, though, Sterling is without a club. He has been a free agent since leaving Dutch side Feyenoord at the end of last season, his future on the pitch already uncertain before the court date entered the calendar.

What comes next for the 31-year-old will now be decided as much in a magistrates’ courtroom as in any boardroom weighing up a move for a former England star.
