Rafael Leao's Potential Move to Manchester United

Rafael Leao has nudged the door to Old Trafford a little wider – and he did it with a smile and a nod to his idol.

The AC Milan forward, long trailed as one of Serie A’s most explosive talents, has spoken openly about his admiration for Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo, sharpening the focus on a transfer race that now looks increasingly like a straight sprint rather than a crowded field.

Leao’s stock drops, but the interest spikes

Since arriving at Milan from Lille in August 2019, Leao has grown into one of the league’s headline acts. Eighty goals and 65 assists in 291 games for the Rossoneri tell one part of the story; the acclaim tells the rest. British GQ branded him a “global superstar”, while Max Allegri and CBS Sports both went with the heavyweight label: “world-class”.

At his peak, Milan treated him like it. The asking price sat north of €100million (£87m), a clear message to suitors that only the elite, and only the serious, need apply.

That stance has softened. After a disappointing campaign and with Leao refusing to sign a new deal, Milan are now ready to cash in at around €50m (£43.5m). The fee has almost halved. The noise around him has not.

On May 1, intermediaries offered Leao to Manchester United, his camp actively pushing for a move. United listened. So did others.

“I like Manchester United”

Then came the comment that every United fan will have clipped and replayed.

In a recent interview, relayed by Alfredo Pedullà, the 26-year-old was asked which English clubs he follows. Leao didn’t dance around it.

“Of course, I watch the Premier League a lot,” he said. “I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol. But Arsenal is also a team I follow on TV.”

It was not a come-and-get-me plea, but it was close enough to feel significant. If Leao ends up with the final say, United and Arsenal sit in prime position. The reality, though, is colder: his future will be dictated by who actually puts money on the table and how far they’re willing to go.

United vs Fenerbahce – two paths, one obvious

Right now, the firmest interest comes from two very different worlds. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United and Fenerbahce are the clubs pushing hardest.

On paper, that’s a contest with a predictable outcome. Fenerbahce are a giant in Turkey, with a fierce fanbase and regular European football, but the Turkish Super Lig does not carry the global weight of the Premier League. For a player who grew up idolising Ronaldo and has just name-checked United on the record, the pull of Old Trafford is obvious.

A move to United would hand Leao the stage he has long seemed destined for: the Premier League spotlight, the No.7 lineage, the chance to follow Ronaldo’s trail rather than just watch it on YouTube.

INEOS, swaps on the table and a Serie A theme

Behind the scenes, United’s new regime under INEOS is already deep into Italian business.

Leao has been earmarked as the next big Serie A target once United complete a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with a £38m move said to be close. The plan is clear: add power and legs in midfield, then go after a statement winger.

United’s interest in Leao is not exclusive. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been offered the player, just as United have, but both clubs are currently prioritising other targets. That leaves United with an opening they rarely get in this market: a world-class forward with limited competition at a reduced fee.

INEOS are exploring ways to squeeze that price down even further. On April 30, they were tipped to offer Milan up to three players in part-exchange to drive the overall cost below the €50m mark. Milan need to sell; United need a left-sided game-changer. The negotiation writes itself.

Left wing under review

Leao is not the only name on United’s left-wing shortlist. The club are also tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they weigh up how best to reshape that flank.

All of this comes as questions swirl around Marcus Rashford’s future. United’s stance on his potential return – after complications emerged over a permanent move to Barcelona – will shape just how aggressively they move for a new starter on the left.

If Rashford stays and rediscovers his edge, Leao becomes luxury. If the situation shifts again, he becomes necessity.

For now, the equation is simple. A discounted fee. A player who has already dominated one major league. A public nod to Manchester United and the chance to chase the path of his idol.

The ball is at Old Trafford. What kind of club do United want to be in this market?
