PSG's Failed Pursuit of Zion Suzuki

PSG’s pursuit of Zion Suzuki has fallen apart at the last possible moment, leaving the French champions without the goalkeeper they thought was already in the bag.

The deal with Parma for the 23-year-old Japan international had been pushed to an advanced stage. A fee of around 35 million euros was agreed between the clubs, the player had given the green light, and only the final touches to his contract and the agents’ commissions were left on the table.

That’s where it exploded.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and RMC, Suzuki’s representatives came back with late financial demands over commissions that PSG judged excessive. The Paris hierarchy refused to bow to the new terms, and negotiations collapsed despite what had effectively been a full agreement.

The club had gone as far as booking Suzuki on a flight to Paris last Saturday for his medical and to sign his contract. Instead of a presentation and photos in a new shirt, the whole operation unravelled in a matter of hours.

PSG had also explored a twist in the plan: signing Suzuki and then sending him on loan to Juventus for a season. That route closed abruptly two days ago when Juventus cut contact with the French club without offering any explanation, shutting down the loan idea before it truly took shape.

With Suzuki off the table, PSG’s goalkeeping hierarchy stays exactly as it is. Russia international Matvey Safonov remains the undisputed No. 1, while Lucas Chevalier continues as his understudy, waiting to see whether the final days of the window bring another surprise attempt to reshape the position.
