Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to sharpen their wide options with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

The 17-year-old arrives at Fratton Park with a growing reputation inside Stamford Bridge. A product of Chelsea’s academy, he has already tasted senior football, making his first-team debut in a 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale.

Chelsea tied him down to professional terms in January, a clear sign of how they view his potential. From there, his trajectory quickened. Kavuma-McQueen was named on the bench for Champions League fixtures against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, and he also made the match-day squad for Premier League games against Liverpool and Tottenham at the back end of last season.

Inside the academy, he has climbed each rung. Regular minutes for the Under-18s, then a step into the U21s, where he established himself enough to catch the eye of the first-team staff. He spent pre-season away with Chelsea’s senior squad, getting minutes on their tour and nudging himself closer to the top level.

Now comes the next test: regular senior football in Pompey blue.

Boss John Mousinho has been open all summer about his desire to add pace and threat out wide, and he believes Kavuma-McQueen fits that brief perfectly.

“We’ve been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in,” Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.

“We’ve tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we’re really excited to get him through the door. I think he’s going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we’re really pleased to get this one done.”

Kavuma-McQueen, comfortable on either flank, will drop straight into a competitive group of wide players. He joins Abu Kamara, Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith in the battle for minutes on the wings, adding another injection of speed and unpredictability to Mousinho’s attacking mix.

For Chelsea, it is a calculated move: one of their most promising young attackers exposed to the grind of senior football. For Portsmouth, it is a gamble on raw talent with a high ceiling.

If Kavuma-McQueen adapts quickly to the demands of League football, this could be the loan that accelerates both his career and Pompey’s ambitions.
