Philippe Coutinho is back. Back in Brazil, back in a No. 11 shirt, back in a dressing room that expects big things.
Santos have confirmed the signing of the former Liverpool and Barcelona playmaker on a short-term deal until the end of the season, handing the 32-year-old a route back into elite football after months away from the game.
From exhaustion to a fresh start
Coutinho has been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. He chose to step away, citing mental exhaustion, and for a long stretch it looked like he might stay out of the spotlight altogether.
Football simply did not make sense to him anymore. Not then.
Now it does. Now he is “refreshed and ready for a new challenge”, as Santos framed it, and the club have given him the iconic No. 11 as a statement of intent.
This is not just any move either. At Santos, Coutinho reunites with his childhood friend and former Brazil team‑mate Neymar, a personal connection that quietly shaped this entire story.
Neymar’s messages that wouldn’t stop
Coutinho did not hide it at his unveiling: Neymar pushed hard.
“Neymar certainly played a very important role in my coming here,” Coutinho said, as quoted by ESPN. “He's a player who needs no introduction, a friend I've had since childhood, and I think he was the first person in football to send me a message when I left Vasco.”
The timing of that first message was striking. Coutinho had just walked away from Vasco, drained and unsure of his future. Within a day, Neymar’s name flashed up on his phone.
“The next day he had already sent me a message, but at that moment I said: ‘Look Ney, it would be a pleasure to play with you, but I'm not feeling well right now, it's not possible’ and it really didn't make sense to me.”
The answer did not change quickly. Coutinho had committed to stepping back, and when Neymar tried again months later, he received the same response.
The moment everything flipped
The turning point came only recently.
“Months later he contacted me again, but my answer was the same. Then two weeks ago he sent me another message,” Coutinho explained. “Then I stopped, reconsidered. I wanted to go back to playing football and I thought: ‘Why not?’ I'm going to a big club, in another city.”
That “why not?” unlocked the door. A big club, a new city, a familiar friend and a fresh environment — suddenly the game that had worn him down offered something different.
“It would be unfair to me not being able to go back to work and not being to go back to playing football. I wanted to thank the president, Mattos and Ney. I'm happy to accept this challenge.”
So Coutinho walks back into the arena with a short-term deal, a heavy shirt on his back and Neymar in his corner. The question now is simple: after stepping away to protect his mind, how much magic does he still have left in those feet?
