Patrick Vieira Appointed Head Coach of Senegal National Team

Patrick Vieira has been named head coach of Senegal, handing one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses to a World Cup‑winning midfielder who was born in the country but made his name with France.

The Senegalese federation confirmed the appointment in a brief statement, ending Vieira’s short spell out of work after his departure from Genoa last November. He steps in for Pape Thiaw, who lost his job following Senegal’s exit to Belgium in the last 32 at this summer’s World Cup.

“Mr Patrick Vieira is the new coach of the Senegalese national A team,” the statement announced, adding that the date of his official unveiling and the details of his installation will follow. It closed with a simple message: “Welcome to Senegal, coach.”

For Senegal, this is a bold, headline move. For Vieira, it is a return to his roots and another demanding chapter in a coaching career that has already taken him across three countries and two continents.

As a player, his honours list needs little introduction. Vieira captained Arsenal during their era of dominance, winning three Premier League titles, and lifted both the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000 with France. His blend of authority, physical presence and tactical intelligence made him one of the defining midfielders of his generation.

His coaching path has been more winding. After starting out with New York City, he moved to Nice, then into the Premier League with Crystal Palace, where he spent two years before being sacked in March 2023. He then took charge of Strasbourg, and most recently Genoa, before leaving the Serie A club last November after a 12‑month stint in Italy.

Now comes international football and the expectations of a nation that has grown used to competing on the biggest stages. The question is no longer whether Patrick Vieira will coach at the highest level. It is what kind of imprint he will leave on the country where his story began.
