Pape Matar Sarr Impresses in Juventus Debut
Pape Matar Sarr didn’t just make his full Juventus debut on Thursday night. He announced himself.
Given a first start in a Bianconeri shirt, the 21-year-old midfielder played the entire 90 minutes as Juventus dismantled NEC 5-0 in the Europa League, and walked off to the kind of praise that carries weight in Turin: Luciano Spalletti’s.
Spalletti’s “thoroughbred”
“Sarr is a thoroughbred because he has quality in his running,” the Juventus coach said in his post-match press conference, via TuttoJuve. The smile behind the words was almost audible.
Spalletti knows what a first start can do to a young player. It can freeze them. Or it can free them.
“He had a good game tonight, especially considering it was his first,” the coach added. “He also responded to me a couple of times, so that's positive. Players with these qualities can sometimes lack a bit of sharpness, but he did many things well. He was always involved with the team and close to the ball. I'm happy with his performance.”
That last line matters. At Juventus, “I’m happy” from the head coach is not handed out lightly.
Numbers that back up the impression
The eye test said Sarr looked at ease. The numbers were even kinder.
According to Sofascore, Sarr completed 98% of his passes, hitting 100% accuracy in the opposition half. He was not hiding either: 70 touches, constantly offering, constantly recycling, always within reach of the ball as Juventus pinned NEC back.
He still showed he is learning the duels and battles of Italian football, winning three of his eight ground duels, but for a first start in a new league, in a new system, it was a controlled, confident display.
The Italian press kept their ratings measured. Gazzetta dello Sport gave him 6.5/10, while Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport both settled on 6/10. Not headlines, not hype. Just a solid base to build on.
From bench cameo to trusted starter
Sarr had already been eased into life at Juventus. He made his debut the previous weekend, coming off the bench against Sassuolo in Serie A at Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore, with Spalletti watching closely from the touchline in Reggio nell’Emilia.
That cameo was a taste. NEC was the real audition.
On Thursday night in Turin, in a Europa League opener that Juventus turned into a statement, Sarr’s name was on the teamsheet from the start. He did not look out of place among seasoned Bianconeri teammates in the pre-match photo at Juventus Stadium. Once the whistle went, he played like he belonged there.
Always near the ball. Always available. Always running.
A calculated gamble in the market
Sarr’s presence in black and white is the product of a late-market move that could become a long-term piece of business.
Juventus brought him in from Tottenham on deadline day on an initial loan, paying €2.5m for the season. The deal includes an option to buy set at €27.5m.
For now, it is a calculated gamble: a relatively low-cost loan, with a sizeable fee attached if he convinces the club he is worth the investment.
Performances like the one against NEC push that decision in one direction.
The first start is done. The first impression is strong. If this is just the beginning, how long before Juventus decide that “option to buy” starts to look more like an obligation in all but name?
