Owen Wijndal Leaves Ajax as Left-Back Era Ends
Owen Wijndal has left Ajax with immediate effect, bringing a swift and slightly stark end to a spell that never quite lived up to its billing.
The 26-year-old left-back, once signed as a cornerstone for the future, no longer saw any realistic path to playing time in Amsterdam. After weeks of talks, both player and club have agreed to tear up a contract that was due to run until mid-2027, Voetbal International reports.
The decision does more than close a chapter. It clears space. By terminating the deal now, Ajax free up room in their wage structure at a moment when the hierarchy on the left side of defence has already been rewritten.
This summer, Ajax moved decisively in that position, bringing in Caio Henrique and Jofre Torrents. Henrique quickly edged ahead of Wijndal in the pecking order in recent weeks, and last weekend showed the shift was no longer just on paper.
In the 0-4 win over Telstar, 19-year-old Spaniard Torrents came off the bench to get minutes. Wijndal did not move. He stayed on the bench for the entire match, a clear sign of where he stood.
The pressure finally told. Conversations in recent weeks focused on finding a way out that suited both sides. That solution has now arrived: an immediate departure, a clean break. Wijndal said his goodbyes to team-mates on Wednesday.
Ajax had brought him in from AZ in 2022 for around €10 million, expecting the Netherlands international to lock down the left flank for years. Instead, his time in Amsterdam never fully caught fire. During the 2023/24 season he spent the campaign on loan at Royal Antwerp FC, a move that already hinted his long-term future might lie elsewhere.
Across all competitions, the Zaandam-born defender made 77 official appearances for Ajax, contributing 3 goals and 7 assists. Respectable numbers, but not enough to protect his place once the club reset their plans at left-back.
For Ajax, the message is clear: the rebuild under way at the Johan Cruyff ArenA leaves little room for sentiment. For Wijndal, the next move is still unknown. The question now is where a 26-year-old with top-flight experience in the Netherlands and Belgium chooses to restart a career that once looked set to be anchored in Amsterdam.
