Orlando Pirates' Patrick Maswanganyi Set for Asian Move
Orlando Pirates star Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi is on the brink of an overseas move, with the Soweto giants understood to have all but wrapped up talks with an unnamed Asian Football Confederation club for the 28-year-old playmaker.
The deal has been bubbling under the surface for days. The clearest sign came at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Pirates edged Sekhukhune United 1–0 in the first leg of their semifinal, Deon Hotto delivering the decisive strike, but all eyes were on the player who wasn’t there. Maswanganyi never made the matchday squad.
After the final whistle, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou cut through the speculation: Maswanganyi was not injured. The omission spoke louder than any official statement.
Signed from SuperSport United in 2023, “Tito” needed no settling-in period. He lit up the Pirates attack, became an instant favourite on the terraces and drove the Buccaneers to their first league title since 2012, finally knocking Mamelodi Sundowns off their perch last season.
That triumph seemed to signal a new era of stability. Pirates had already cashed in on Relebohile Mofokeng, the reigning Footballer of the Year, sending their talisman to Belgian top-flight side Union Saint-Gilloise shortly after the FIFA World Cup. Losing another cornerstone so soon felt unlikely.
Yet the exits have kept coming. The club confirmed right-back Deano van Rooyen’s departure after just two years in black and white. Now Maswanganyi, who had featured in every fixture this season before the trip to Polokwane to face Babina Noko, appears next in line for the departure lounge.
For Maswanganyi, a move abroad would not be a leap into the unknown. As a teenager he left the renowned Stars of Africa Academy for Portugal, spending several formative years in Europe and learning the demands of football far from home.
He has four Bafana Bafana caps, a modest tally that doesn’t quite match his influence at club level. He missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the start of the year and then the World Cup, slipping down the national-team pecking order at the worst possible time.
Now, with talks advanced and his absence from the Pirates squad raising the volume on the rumours, it looks like “Tito” is set to chase his next chapter in Asia. The question is no longer whether he goes — it’s how Orlando Pirates reshape themselves once another of their title-winning catalysts walks out the door.
