Orlando Pirates Confirm Deano van Rooyen's Departure
Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of defender Deano van Rooyen, ending his stay in Soweto by mutual consent after just one season.
The announcement, made in a formal club statement on Friday, drew a sharp intake of breath from many supporters who had grown used to seeing the reliable full-back’s name on the team sheet.
“The Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club, after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent,” Pirates said, adding that the call followed “open conversations” about his future and his desire to “begin a new chapter in his career.”
A model professional
Van Rooyen arrived at the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, bringing with him a reputation as one of the Betway Premiership’s most consistent full-backs.
He didn’t disappoint.
Coaches leaned on his versatility and temperament. Whether thrown into the starting XI or asked to make an impact off the bench, Van Rooyen delivered the same steady, disciplined performances that had made him a standout in Stellenbosch colours.
Inside the club, he was regarded as a model professional. On the pitch, he quietly piled up over 50 appearances in Pirates black and white, rarely drawing headlines but just as rarely putting a foot wrong.
Now, after those “extensive discussions” between player and club, both sides have decided the timing is right for a clean break and a fresh start.
The Buccaneers lose a dependable option at full-back. Van Rooyen, still in his prime, steps into the open market with a solid Premiership résumé and the freedom to choose his next move.
His next chapter starts now.
