Nottingham Forest Faces FC Porto Without Elliot Anderson
Nottingham Forest will face FC Porto in the Europa League tonight without one of their most influential players, after the club confirmed Elliot Anderson is absent following the death of his mother.
In a statement released ahead of the quarter-final second leg, Forest said: “Elliot Anderson is unavailable for tonight’s fixture following the passing of his beloved mother, Helen.
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest Football Club extends its deepest condolences to Elliot and his family following this extremely sad news. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the Anderson family at this difficult time.”
There is football on the schedule at the City Ground, but for Forest the night now carries a different weight. A European tie, a packed stadium, a shot at a first semi-final on the continent since the club’s glory years – all framed by the loss suffered by a 23-year-old who has driven so much of their season.
Anderson has been central to Forest’s campaign. Forty-two appearances, consistent performances, and a growing influence in midfield have marked him out as one of their standout players this year. His form has carried him into the England squad, where he has quickly become a key figure and is widely expected to feature at the World Cup this summer.
The news of his bereavement has drawn messages from across the game. Among the first to respond were tonight’s opponents. FC Porto posted on X: “Our thoughts are with Elliot Anderson and his family tonight. Everyone at FC Porto sends their deepest condolences during this difficult time.”
Rivalry pauses for a moment when something like this happens. The competitive edge of a European knockout night gives way, briefly, to something more human.
Anderson was already missing from Forest’s preparations. He did not train on Wednesday morning and played no part in last week’s 1-1 draw in Porto, when he was suspended after an accumulation of yellow cards. His absence tonight, though, comes from a far more painful place.
Porto's European Ambitions
On the pitch, Vitor Pereira’s side arrive with history in their sights. Porto are pushing to reach the Europa League semi-finals in what is their first European campaign since 1995-96, when they reached the last eight of the then-UEFA Cup. Forest, for their part, step into a competition that still echoes with their past achievements, having lifted the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 under Brian Clough.
Those old triumphs built the club’s reputation across the continent. This current side has been trying to write its own European story. For much of this season, Anderson has been at the heart of that effort.
Tonight, Forest must go on without him. The game will still matter, the stakes will still be high, and the crowd will still roar. But for one of their brightest talents, and for those around him, football suddenly feels very small.
