Nordin Jackers Faces Uncertain Future at Club Brugge
Nordin Jackers is staring at a dead end at Club Brugge. Unless something drastic changes, the January window looks less like an option and more like an escape route.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper has slipped to third choice in Ivan Leko’s hierarchy. That alone tells the story. When Club Brugge brought in Yann Sommer from Inter, Jackers already knew he was fighting an uphill battle. Second choice at best, understudy again, but at least still in the conversation.
That conversation is over.
HLN report that Leko has now promoted 19-year-old Argus Vanden Driessche to Sommer’s deputy.
A teenager, straight past Jackers in the pecking order at one of Belgium’s biggest clubs. Inside the dressing room, that kind of decision is loud without saying a word.
Sommer himself has not exactly glided into life at Club Brugge. He produced some big saves against Antwerp at the weekend, but he was also at fault for the goal they conceded. On another day, that might have opened the door for the man behind him. Instead, it underlined how much faith the club has in Vanden Driessche. Even with the new No. 1 showing early cracks, the youngster is the one being pushed forward.
That is the brutal part for Jackers. He has done his job whenever called upon, stepping in for Simon Mignolet and delivering solid performances that convinced parts of the Club Brugge support he could be trusted as a starter this season. There was a version of this campaign where he finally got his run.
It has vanished in a matter of weeks.
At 29, he is entering what should be his prime years. Third choice means training-ground drills, warm-ups, and very little else. For a goalkeeper with ambition, that is not a role. It is a warning.
The Belgian Pro League will have noticed. Jackers’ displays since arriving from OH Leuven were more than competent auditions, and clubs in need of a reliable, experienced keeper will not need much convincing. He brings top-club experience, a calm presence, and the hunger of someone who has spent too long looking at the pitch instead of standing on it.
For Club Brugge, the message is clear: Sommer is the present, Vanden Driessche is the future. For Nordin Jackers, the message is clearer still. If he wants a career, not a seat, January has to be the moment he walks out in search of a No. 1 shirt.
