Noah Okafor Ends Switzerland Career Under Murat Yakin
Noah Okafor has drawn a hard line under his Switzerland career – at least for as long as Murat Yakin is in charge.
The Leeds United forward announced on Thursday that he will no longer represent the national team under the current head coach, saying trust between the two has broken down beyond repair.
Okafor, 26, has collected 26 caps since his debut in 2019, but his role at the recent World Cup was reduced to a footnote: just 19 minutes, all of them as a substitute in the last-32 win over Algeria.
On Instagram, he made it clear this is not a protest about minutes on the pitch. It runs deeper than that.
"My decision has nothing to do with my playing time," he wrote. "Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept.
"When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply.
"In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager."
Those words land like a direct challenge to Yakin’s leadership. This is not a player quietly fading away from the international scene; it is a public declaration that the relationship has fractured.
The Swiss FA confirmed it had been informed of Okafor’s stance on Thursday. A spokesperson told Reuters: "We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club."
For now, that club is Leeds United. Okafor moved to Elland Road from AC Milan in August 2025 for £18m, a signing framed as part of a new attacking era for the Yorkshire side.
Yakin, appointed Switzerland head coach in August 2021, must now plan ahead without a forward who, at his best, offers pace, direct running and flexibility across the front line.
Switzerland’s next test comes on 26 September, away to North Macedonia in their opening match of the 2026-27 Nations League.
Okafor has made his position plain. The question now is whether Switzerland can afford for this to be permanent – and whether anything changes before Yakin’s time in charge runs its course.
