Neymar's Minor Calf Injury Ahead of World Cup

Santos have moved to calm early World Cup nerves around Neymar after confirming the forward is carrying a minor injury to his right calf.

Head of Medical Services Rodrigo Zogaib revealed the No. 10 has a small edema in the muscle, picked up during Santos’ defeat to Coritiba in the Brasileirão last Sunday (17). The issue is real, but inside the club the mood is far from alarmist.

“It’s a small injury, an edema,” Zogaib told ge, outlining a treatment window of five to ten days. The plan is clear: Neymar should be fit and ready to report to the Brazilian national team “without limitations” for the start of World Cup preparations.

The details help frame the picture. The edema measures just two millimeters, according to ge, and the medical staff at Santos expect a swift response to therapy. They even believe he could be available for the upcoming Copa Sudamericana clash with Deportivo Cuenca, a sign of how contained the problem appears from the club’s perspective.

Not everyone is quite so relaxed. Journalist Diogo Dantas, from O Globo, reported that the injury could demand a “reasonable amount of time” for recovery and has already stirred concern within Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff. With a World Cup on the doorstep, even a minor calf issue for Brazil’s main creative reference is enough to sharpen pulses at Granja Comary and beyond.

The calendar leaves little room for missteps. Brazil open their training camp on the 27th of this month at Granja Comary, with the expectation that Neymar will arrive fully cleared. Four days later, on the 31st, the Seleção face Panama in a farewell friendly at the Maracanã, their last outing on home soil before flying out.

Once in the United States, the build-up tightens. On June 6, Ancelotti’s side meet Egypt in their final test before their World Cup debut. Every session, every sprint, every touch from Neymar between now and then will be watched closely.

For now, the message from Santos is one of control and optimism. The national team staff, though, will only truly relax when Neymar steps onto the training pitch at Granja Comary and moves as if the calf scare never happened.
