Newcastle United Pursues Alvaro Montoro Amidst Competition
Newcastle United’s youth-first rebuild has taken a familiar turn: another highly rated teenager is in their sights, but this one is locked behind a firm “not for sale” sign in Brazil.
The club’s summer business under Matthias Jaissle has already leaned heavily into potential, with a string of signings aged 21 or under. Newcastle’s recruitment team clearly isn’t just shopping for instant starters; they’re stocking the next generation. Now, that search has pushed deep into South America.
Newcastle join crowded race for Montoro
According to Globo Esporte journalist Letícia Marques, Newcastle are one of seven clubs tracking Botafogo midfielder Alvaro Montoro, a 19-year-old Argentine who has quickly become one of the most talked-about young talents in Brazil.
They are not alone. AC Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP, Real Betis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Atlanta United have all registered interest, Marques reports.
“The list of clubs interested in Montoro is long: Atlanta United, Betis, Milan, Newcastle, Ajax, Sporting, and Wolverhampton,” she wrote. “There were indications of an offer in the region of 20 million euros. However, negotiations did not advance due to Botafogo's decision to keep the player at this time.”
European clubs have broadly placed Montoro’s value around €20 million (£17.3 million), according to the same report. Botafogo, though, have taken a different view.
Botafogo dig in after cash injection
The Brazilian side has already turned down a proposal in that price range from another South American club, underlining their stance. Earlier this year, Botafogo were prepared to sell Montoro and teammate Danilo to ease financial pressure. That plan has been ripped up.
The arrival of new investor GDA has stabilised the club’s finances and shifted the strategy. With money less of an immediate concern, Botafogo now intend to keep both players at least until the end of the Brazilian season.
That decision has effectively shut the door on any move in the current window, no matter how many scouts fill the stands or how many European clubs circle.
Player wants Europe, club holds the cards
The story doesn’t end there for Newcastle or any of Montoro’s other suitors. Marques reports that the teenager’s ambition is clear: he wants to play in Europe. For now, though, he accepts Botafogo’s refusal to negotiate.
“The player is interested in playing in Europe, but understands the club's decision not to negotiate his transfer at this time,” she noted.
Botafogo have strengthened their hand further. Montoro, who joined from Vélez Sarsfield last year, has already logged 59 appearances, producing six goals and seven assists. His performances have been rewarded with a new contract reportedly running through December 2030, a deal that gives the club significant leverage in any future talks.
For Newcastle, that means one thing: if they come back for him once Botafogo are finally ready to talk, the price is likely to be well beyond the €20 million figure already on the table.
The race has started early. The real question is who will still be in it when Botafogo finally decide to cash in.
