Newcastle United Competes for Christopher Nkunku Amid Leipzig Interest
Newcastle United are still in the hunt for Christopher Nkunku – but they are now fighting against more than just AC Milan’s asking price.
They are fighting the player’s heart.
Nkunku frozen out, door wide open
At 28, Nkunku is effectively done at Milan. He has no squad number, no role, and no future at San Siro. A move before the deadline is not just likely; it’s inevitable.
Two clubs have stepped up: Newcastle United and RB Leipzig.
Both sides have made direct contact with Milan over a deal, as reported on Friday by Fabrizio Romano. At that stage, the race looked tight. Since then, the picture has shifted. Leipzig have pushed ahead, not because they are offering more money, but because they are offering something Nkunku values more: a return home.
Player wants Leipzig, Milan waits for Newcastle
According to TuttoMercato journalist Daniel Najjar, Nkunku has already reached an agreement with Leipzig and has informed Milan that going back to his former club is his clear preference.
The problem for him is simple. Milan still hold the contract, and Milan hold the power.
The Serie A side believe Newcastle can put more cash on the table. So they are stalling. Waiting. Hoping the Premier League money arrives.
“Milan continues to wait for Newcastle, the Rossoneri believing they can present a better offer in terms of the loan fee and the terms,” Najjar reported. “The player currently absolutely wants to go to Leipzig.”
That is a sharp turn from where things stood on Friday, when a reunion with Leipzig looked almost like the only realistic outcome.
Money vs. appeal
On the financial front, Newcastle have already shown their hand.
Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo reported that Newcastle have sent Milan the strongest financial proposal so far. Yet Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has underlined why Leipzig remain in front: they simply appeal more to Nkunku.
Milan are caught between those two forces. The player’s wish on one side. The Premier League cheque book on the other.
Right now, the numbers look like this. TuttoMercato’s Nicholas Righi says Milan and Leipzig are working on a loan with an option to buy, with the total package potentially climbing to €33–35 million (£28.5–30 million). Newcastle, by contrast, are ready to go straight in with a permanent deal worth around €35 million (£30 million).
For Milan, that kind of clean, guaranteed fee is tempting. For Nkunku, it is not the decisive factor.
A history that’s hard to ignore
Nkunku’s preference for Leipzig is no mystery.
Between 2019 and 2023, he scored 70 goals and laid on 56 assists in 172 games for the German club, collecting individual honours in the Bundesliga and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.
Leipzig is where he became Christopher Nkunku, not just a promising talent but a star. That sort of bond is hard to compete with, even for a club backed by Premier League wealth.
So Milan wait. Leipzig push. Newcastle hover, knowing they can satisfy Milan’s demands but not yet the player’s.
At some point, Newcastle must decide: do they throw even more money at a forward whose heart is set on Germany, or walk away and chase someone who actually wants to wear black and white?
