Newcastle United’s rebuild has already felt brutal. Three of their best players gone in one summer, a new head coach in Matthias Jaissle, and a sporting director in Ross Wilson tasked with reshaping an attack that suddenly looks light.

Now a bold name has entered the conversation.

Christian Kofane, Bayer Leverkusen’s 20-year-old forward, is emerging as one of the most coveted young attackers in Europe. Until now, his name has been more heavily tied to Arsenal. But his agent has brought Newcastle directly into the frame.

Eric Depolo, speaking to Metro, confirmed that Newcastle are among a cluster of major clubs tracking the Cameroon international. Asked which sides, beyond Arsenal, had shown interest, he reeled off a heavyweight list: Newcastle, Chelsea, Everton, Brentford, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

That’s the level of company Newcastle are keeping in this chase.

Kofane joined Leverkusen only last summer from Spanish second-tier side Albacete for a reported €5.3 million. One season later, his value has exploded. His estimated price has shot up to around €26.5 million after a breakout campaign in Germany.

The numbers help explain why.

Seven goals and nine assists in 44 appearances across all competitions in his debut Bundesliga season, and crucially, he impressed on the biggest stage. His performances against Arsenal in the Champions League round of 16 caught plenty of eyes, including, it seems, those in north London.

Arsenal out in front

While Newcastle’s interest is real, Arsenal are currently ahead in the queue.

Depolo has already held talks with the Gunners and made it clear that Mikel Arteta is a big admirer of the forward.

“Yes, Arsenal's interest is genuine,” Depolo said. “The manager [Mikel Arteta] likes him very much.”

Then came the line that will concern any rival suitor: the agent described Arsenal as being in “pole position”, even if he stopped short of calling the race.

“I think it is too early to say [which club is leading the race],” he added. “But due to the fact that the player speaks Spanish, like Mikel Arteta, and that William Saliba is originally from Cameroon, I would say Arsenal are in pole position.”

Language, familiarity, a growing French-speaking core and a manager who clearly rates him — it all tilts the scales toward the Emirates for now.

A €100m question for Newcastle

There is another obstacle. A huge one.

Depolo has publicly slapped a €100 million (£85m) valuation on his client, a figure that would put Kofane in the elite bracket of transfer fees.

“He is a €100 million (£85m) player. With Kofane, Arsenal will have a top striker for the next ten years,” the agent said.

Leverkusen are under no pressure to sell. Kofane is tied down until 2029, which leaves the German champions in a commanding position at the negotiating table. Any club, Newcastle included, would need to make a massive financial commitment to even start a serious conversation.

For Newcastle, that poses a dilemma. The club has made a clear pivot toward younger, high-upside profiles, and Kofane fits that model perfectly: 20 years old, already proven at Champions League level, and room to grow into a genuine star.

But €100 million for a forward with just one top-flight season behind him? That is a different kind of gamble.

Newcastle now must decide what kind of statement they want this window to be: a record-breaking swing on potential, or a more measured move for a proven, established attacker to lead Jaissle’s new era.
