Newcastle Targets Another La Masia Talent: Guille Fernández
Newcastle’s youth drive is showing no sign of slowing.
After a summer already defined by teenage signings, the club is closing in on another highly rated prospect, this time from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, as Matthias Jaissle juggles long-term planning with the urgent need for ready-made first-team quality before the transfer deadline.
Another La Masia talent in Newcastle’s sights
Newcastle have already brought in 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster the midfield ranks. Reports on Wednesday then linked the Magpies with an agreement for 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate.
Now, according to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, they are “close” to landing another 18-year-old midfielder: Guille Fernández of Barcelona.
Fernández outlined Barcelona’s current strategy with their next generation of talent: move youngsters on, but keep a route back.
“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” he reported. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”
That last line matters. Newcastle are not alone at the table.
Who is Guille Fernández?
Guille Fernández has yet to make his senior debut for Barcelona, but he has climbed through the La Masia system and broken into the club’s reserve setup. Versatile in central areas, he can operate across multiple midfield roles and already features for Spain at Under-19 level.
Heading into the 2027–27 season, his market value stands at around €3 million. He is currently listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster, but the path to regular minutes in Catalonia is steep, blocked by established senior options and fierce internal competition.
The profile is clear: technically schooled, tactically flexible, and young enough to grow into whatever role his next club demands.
Barcelona want a safety net
Fernández’s reporting also underlines Barcelona’s stance. They do not want a clean break.
The Catalan club intend to retain some control over Guille Fernández’s long-term future, likely through a buy-back clause written into any deal. No specific fee or structure has been disclosed, and there are no confirmed figures for the initial transfer either.
What is clear is that a bidding war would drive the price up. With other clubs in the mix, Newcastle may have to decide how far they are willing to go for a player who would arrive as a project rather than an instant starter.
Newcastle’s two-track rebuild
Even as they stockpile prospects, Newcastle are not ignoring the present. The club is also chasing a more experienced midfielder capable of immediately absorbing some of the quality lost with Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes departing, targeting Man City’s Nico Gonzalez — himself another La Masia product.
So the picture is layered. On one track, Newcastle are building a core of teenagers like Steur, Bamba, Diabate and potentially Guille Fernández. On the other, they are trying to plug major gaps in the here and now.
If the deal for Guille goes through, it will be another clear marker of Newcastle’s commitment to a youth-driven rebuild — and another test of whether this long-term gamble can keep pace with the demands of a squad that also needs to win immediately.
