New Zealand Demands FIFA Audit Amid Infantino's Erosion of Support

Gianni Infantino’s support is no longer just eroding in Europe. It is now cracking at the far edge of the football map.

New Zealand Football (NZF) has formally withdrawn its backing for the Swiss official’s candidacy ahead of the 2027 FIFA Congress, a striking public rebuke from one of Oceania’s most respected federations.

That alone would have been a clear message. New Zealand went further.

The federation has officially called for an independent review of the FIFA Forward Enterprise program, demanding an external audit of how the governing body manages its flagship development and funding scheme. For Zurich, it is a direct challenge to the heart of its financial and development model.

After conducting its own internal analysis, NZF says FIFA’s recent decisions have eroded trust and deepened division across the global game. In its view, only an investigation led from outside FIFA can begin to repair the governing body’s credibility.

This is not framed as a local grievance. New Zealand’s leadership argues that the current turbulence is a rare opening for member associations worldwide to push hard for stronger governance, real transparency, and genuine accountability at the top of the sport.

By stepping out so publicly, NZF has opened a new front in the resistance to Infantino’s leadership, one that stretches well beyond the European federations that have already broken ranks.

The move follows the stance taken by Ireland and several other European associations, who have already slammed the door on supporting the incumbent. What began as a continental murmur has turned into a broader, global current of dissent.

With New Zealand now on that list, the pressure around Infantino’s backing ahead of the next elections no longer looks like a contained European revolt. It looks like the start of a worldwide reckoning over who controls football’s future – and how.
