Musiala Addresses Neurological Issue After On-Field Episodes
Jamal Musiala has moved to calm fears over his health after twice leaving the pitch in worrying circumstances, revealing he has been diagnosed with “brief, temporary but readily treatable absences” caused by a neurological dysfunction.
The Bayern Munich midfielder first alarmed teammates and supporters on Saturday when he appeared to collapse off the ball during a pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig. He was able to rejoin Vincent Kompany’s squad for Bayern’s final warm-up game against Heidenheim on Tuesday, a sign many took as reassurance.
That feeling didn’t last long.
Introduced from the bench in the second half, Musiala was forced to come off again just minutes later, escorted slowly from the field by medical staff. The images sparked immediate concern over the 21-year-old’s wellbeing and his short- and long-term future.
Musiala chose to address the situation directly on his Instagram channel, starting with the message everyone around Bayern wanted to hear.
“First things first – I’m doing well. I’m especially grateful for all your messages and your support,” he wrote.
From there, he set out to explain what has been happening.
“I understand that many of you are worried. Today, I’d like to put your minds at ease and explain the situation a little: I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary but readily treatable absences, which are caused by a neurological dysfunction.
“These can lead to the episodes that have occurred recently, such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim.”
The description fits what fans saw: short, sudden episodes that looked alarming but ended quickly. Musiala acknowledged that from the outside it can look frightening.
“I know that they may seem scary at first glance – but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life. I am receiving the best possible medical treatment for this and I am very optimistic. FC Bayern and the people close to me are always by my side and supporting me on this journey.
“The important thing is that there is no further health risk beyond this.”
Crucially, Musiala stressed that he is continuing to play with the approval of specialists and that the decision to carry on is his, made in close consultation with doctors and the club.
“In close consultation and regular communication with the specialists, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the approval of the neurological specialists, to continue doing what helps me most in my recovery: simply getting on with my everyday life and continuing to pursue my passion of playing football.
“I have taken responsibility for that decision. Overall, I have a very good feeling and I’m on the right track. What helps me most on this journey is continuing to chase victories and titles with my team, with your fantastic support.”
The statement underlines two clear points: the condition is being treated and monitored, and Musiala wants his football life to remain as normal as possible while that process continues.
He closed by asking for space as he manages the issue with those closest to him.
“I hope this helps you understand me a little better. At the same time, I ask for your understanding that I would like to continue keeping this matter within the circle of my closest confidants, the club and the experts.”
For Bayern and Germany, the message is stark but steady: their young star is dealing with a serious neurological challenge, yet he intends to keep driving his career forward, one game at a time.
