Jose Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep one of their crown jewels out of the Premier League’s reach.

The Portuguese coach, back at the Bernabeu for a second spell, told the Brazilian forward it was “not worth” walking away from Real Madrid as his contract ticked into its final year and Arsenal circled.

Vinicius, 26, had entered the last 12 months of his deal, a situation that would have allowed him to leave for nothing next summer. Arsenal, fresh from a title-winning season in the Premier League, were alerted as negotiations dragged and sensed a rare opening for one of the game’s elite wingers.

That window has slammed shut. Earlier this month, Vinicius signed a new six-year contract, tying his prime years to Madrid. Mourinho says a few carefully chosen words helped tip the balance.

Speaking on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, the 63-year-old lifted the lid on his role.

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said. “The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

For Mourinho, it wasn’t just about romance or history. It was about the project he believes is forming around the Brazilian.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added.

From Champions League rivals to allies

The relationship between Mourinho and Vinicius has not always been framed in white shirts and shared ambitions. Last season, they stood on opposite sides of a Champions League tie, Mourinho in the Benfica dugout and Vinicius leading Madrid’s attack.

Across three meetings in Europe, the tension peaked during the first leg of their knockout phase play-off. The match was halted for around eight minutes after Real Madrid players alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni had racially abused Vinicius.

Prestianni denied the allegations. Mourinho, then Benfica manager, closed ranks around his player.

Uefa later investigated and issued a punishment, banning Prestianni for three matches with a further three suspended for homophobic conduct. The governing body did not classify the offence as racist in its ruling, but the incident left a mark on all involved.

Mourinho has now revisited that night and drawn a line under where he stands with Vinicius.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate,” he said. “If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story.”

Those words underline Mourinho’s long-held mantra: protect your own. Yet the dynamic has shifted now that Vinicius is one of “his” players too.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side,” Mourinho said.

From Champions League adversary to central pillar of his second Madrid era, Vinicius has gone from target to talisman. Mourinho has nailed his colours to the mast. The Brazilian has nailed his future to the Bernabeu. Now the question is simple: how far can that alliance take Real Madrid?
