Mohamed Salah Welcomes Baby Son Leil in Liverpool
Mohamed Salah has slipped quietly back into Liverpool, the city he once lit up on a weekly basis, for a far more personal milestone than any hat-trick or title race.
The former Anfield star has welcomed his third child – and first son – with wife Magi, with the baby boy named Leil, a name that translates to “night” in Arabic. News of the birth emerged after Salah’s sister, Rabab, shared the family’s joy on social media.
Salah, now 34, left Liverpool in the summer after the club and player agreed to terminate his contract a year early. He had signed a two-year deal in 2025 but walked away 12 months before its expiry, ending nearly a decade on Merseyside. Despite that abrupt conclusion, it was back in the north west of England where his wife is reported to have given birth.
The Egypt legend is rebuilding his career in Turkey with Trabzonspor, and even there, family life is running in parallel with football’s relentless churn. Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan revealed that Salah was not the only high-profile player juggling new surroundings with new fatherhood.
Speaking to 61saat, Dogan said: "After the (Amed SK) match, I travelled abroad with Salah and Andre Onana. Both of them had new children, Onana had twins and Salah a baby boy. I congratulate their families and their wives.”
For Salah, this is another chapter with Magi, his childhood sweetheart. The pair grew up together in Nagrig, his hometown in Egypt, before she later trained as a biotechnician. They married in 2013 and built a young family alongside his rise to global superstardom.
Their first daughter, Makka, arrived in 2014, just as his European journey was beginning to gather pace. Kayan followed in 2020, born during Salah’s peak years as the face of Liverpool’s modern era. Now comes Leil, the first son, born against the backdrop of a new adventure in Turkey but in the city that became their second home.
Liverpool was never just a workplace for Salah. He has spoken often about how settled his family felt on Merseyside, how rooted they were in the community and the rhythm of the city.
“They feel at home [here],” he said previously. “They were very happy, [wife] Magi and the kids, they were very happy that we're staying another two years. It feels like home so everyone was happy.”
That plan – to stay the extra two years – did not survive the realities of football politics and squad evolution. The contract signed in 2025 was ripped up a year early, sending Salah towards the Black Sea and Trabzonspor. The emotional bond with Liverpool, though, clearly lingers. The birth of his son there only deepens that connection.
Life in Turkey has already tested him. Trabzonspor crashed out of the Europa League play-offs in brutal fashion, losing 5-0 on aggregate to Hungarian side Ferencvaros. The fallout was swift. Head coach Fatih Tekke departed, leaving the club to reset before the season has truly settled.
Salah responded not with silence but with defiance. In a statement on social media after that European humiliation, he framed the setback as another hurdle, not a dead end.
"Nothing in my career ever came easy. Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies. Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that. I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we can and will deliver. ‘I came here to win’ is not just a slogan to me."
A new baby, a new club, a new league, a coach already gone, and expectations still sky-high. Salah has lived through pressure before, but now he does it with a son named after the night and a family that has grown on two different shores.
What comes next in Turkey will test his words. The trophies he talks about, the project he claims body and soul – all of it will be measured in the months ahead, with Leil’s arrival adding one more reason to make this latest chapter count.
