Mikel Merino Shines as Arsenal Captain in Carabao Cup

Mikel Merino walked out at Portman Road with the armband on and a grin he could barely hide. Matchday captain for Arsenal again, trusted by Mikel Arteta, and this time he marked it with a goal.

For a 30-year-old who has grafted his way through European football, this kind of responsibility still hits deep.

“It is a huge honour to represent the club in this way,” he said afterwards, the words carrying more weight than the competition might suggest. This was a Carabao Cup tie against Ipswich Town, not a title decider at the Emirates, but Merino wasn’t playing it down.

“Many legends have done it before me,” he added. “I know it is just a Carabao Cup game, but to me it is happiness. I try to do the best I can to represent this club and I know how big it is to wear the armband, so I'm really happy.”

He had every right to be. Merino, wearing the captain’s band for only the second time – his first came in last season’s Carabao Cup last-16 win over Brighton – drove Arsenal through the contest and struck in the 58th minute to underline his influence.

Yet when the conversation turned to himself, he kept steering it away. His mind was on someone else.

A teenager, 16 years old, stealing some of the spotlight.

Max Dowman became Arsenal’s second youngest goalscorer in the history of the competition, a landmark moment on a night that could shape his belief as much as his career. Merino, one of the veterans he now looks up to in the dressing room, did not hold back in his assessment.

“He is honestly an unbelievable talent,” the Spaniard said. “He is so young and so alive. You can see the joy in his eyes when he plays football.”

That joy has caught the eye inside the club as well. Dowman’s fearlessness, his willingness to demand the ball, stood out against senior opposition. But Merino knows raw talent is only the starting point.

“Obviously there are things to improve as he is very young,” he continued. “He needs to keep listening and learning from us veterans. We are here to support him and we are going to get him to the best version of himself, for sure.”

On a cool cup night in Suffolk, Arsenal’s captain for the evening found the net, embraced the armband and pointed straight at the future. Dowman will wake up replaying his goal. Merino will wake up knowing part of his job now is to make sure it’s the first of many.
