Talks over a new contract, which have dragged on longer than many expected, have accelerated in recent weeks. Well-placed sources describe confidence on all sides that Arteta will commit to fresh terms, easing any nerves over a situation that has been edging towards a decisive point with just nine months left on his current deal.

For supporters, though, words are no substitute for a signature. Arteta has become the defining figure of the modern Arsenal, his influence stretching across every corner of the first-team operation. Training, tactics, recruitment, culture – nothing significant happens without his say-so.

Strip him out of that structure and the whole project looks different. For the club’s ownership, that scenario barely bears thinking about.

The squad on the pitch is the clearest argument for keeping him. This is no longer a callow, transitional group. With an average age of 26.2, it is one of the older squads in the Premier League, a team not just emerging but operating in its prime years, built to compete now and to leave something lasting behind.

Arteta has pushed Arsenal to match that ambition off the pitch as well. The club’s summer outlay underlined the point. Big money went on Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa, both of whom will turn 30 next year – signings aimed at immediate impact, not distant resale value. Arsenal also swung for the very top of the market, pursuing Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez, even if those elite moves ultimately came to nothing.

The message to their manager was unmistakable: the owners are prepared to back a serious tilt at the game’s biggest prizes.

Those are precisely the signals Arteta wanted to see as contract discussions unfolded. Arsenal are not just offering him improved financial terms. They are, once again, placing the direction of the club in his hands and betting that his vision is the one that can finally turn promise into trophies.
