Why Mikel Arteta Stopped Arsenal’s Deadline Day Bid for Malick Fofana Before Sunderland Signed Him
Arsenal's attempt to strengthen their attack took an unexpected twist on deadline day when they chose not to sign Malick Fofana, the promising Belgian winger from Lyon. Although the club had the chance to bring the youngster in, manager Mikel Arteta decided against completing the deal in the closing hours of the transfer window.
Concerns Over Premier League Demands
Despite losing key forwards like Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, Arteta was doubtful about Fofana’s readiness for the Premier League. Sources from The Athletic reveal that the coaching team worried about the 21-year-old’s capacity to handle the league’s physicality and relentless pace. Even with Fofana’s clear technical skill and speed, there was a fear he might not immediately influence games at the level expected of a club chasing major honors.
Financial Challenges and UEFA Rules
Arsenal faced more than just tactical questions. Lyon wanted around £30 million for Fofana, aiming to boost funds after missing out on Champions League qualification. Arsenal, meanwhile, preferred a loan move to stay within UEFA’s strict spending rules. This difference—between a permanent transfer and a temporary one—brought negotiations to a halt. Earlier, Arsenal had also missed out on targets such as Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior, while a last-minute bid for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez fell through when the Argentine showed no interest in returning to England.
Sunderland Seizes the Opportunity
While Arsenal stepped back, Sunderland and Crystal Palace fought hard for Fofana’s signature. The Black Cats ultimately secured the player by offering his representatives a better commission, landing him on a five-year contract. Sunderland’s management expressed great satisfaction in acquiring a player once linked with big names like Liverpool and Chelsea. This transfer is seen as a major success for the club, bringing in one of Ligue 1’s most exciting young talents.
Director of Football on Fofana’s Potential
“Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League. He is a player with huge potential, and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper,” said Sunderland’s Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi, at the official announcement.
Ghisolfi added insight into how Fofana fits the team’s tactics: “He plays on the left and will complement the versatility of our other wide players who can operate across both flanks. We’re delighted to welcome Malick and look forward to supporting his growth as he takes the next step in his career.”
