Mikel Arteta Assures Arsenal Fans About His Future
Mikel Arteta has moved to calm any anxiety over his Arsenal future, insisting fans “don’t have to worry” as he made clear he wants to stay at the club.
The Spaniard is into the final 12 months of the deal he signed in 2024, but walked into his pre-Community Shield news conference sounding anything but uneasy about the situation. Contract talks can wait. His message was simple: he is exactly where he wants to be.
“I want to be here, I'm extremely happy,” Arteta said. “I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with and whenever we have the possibility we will resolve that and that's it.”
No drama. No brinkmanship. Just a manager who has just delivered Arsenal’s first Premier League title in 22 years and is now preparing to face Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, with the Community Shield the first marker of a season in which the champions will be hunted.
Contract calm as Arsenal chase more silverware
Arteta, in charge since 2019, has overseen a transformation that culminated in last season’s title and a run to the Champions League final, where Arsenal fell to Paris St-Germain. That upward curve has sparked understandable concern among some supporters about his contract running down, especially with the 2026-27 campaign edging closer.
He is not sharing that concern.
“There's always another priority I think and that's the way we've been treating it,” he explained. “I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue.
“My will certainly is to be here and I'm very happy here. And my feeling from the club is the same one, so I think that's why everybody is doing things in a really organic way.”
The club’s stance mirrors his. With the transfer window open until 1 September and major squad business still in motion, Arsenal are content to park formal contract discussions until the season settles and the noise dies down.
Heavy spending, clear intent
On the pitch and in the market, there is nothing relaxed about Arsenal’s ambition.
The champions missed out on Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr, a bold but ultimately unsuccessful pursuit that underlined where they now see themselves in the European hierarchy. They responded by driving hard in other areas.
Bruno Guimaraes has arrived from Newcastle to bolster midfield with proven Premier League quality. Greece international winger Christos Tzolis joins from Club Brugge, adding another direct, energetic wide option. At the back, Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen has been turned into a permanent deal. The combined outlay for that trio stands at £143.5m.
There has been opportunism too. Illan Meslier has come in on a free transfer from Leeds United, a low-cost move that adds competition and depth in goal.
Some familiar faces have gone the other way. Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Christian Norgaard have all been moved on as Arteta and the club continue to refine a squad built not just to win the league once, but to live at that level.
Defensive worries shape the next move
Not everything has gone to plan. Injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber have forced Arsenal back into the market for another defender. The club remain interested in Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Jarell Quansah of Bayer Leverkusen as they look to reinforce a back line that was the bedrock of last season’s title.
Arteta would not be drawn on names, but he did not hide the scale of the club’s ambition.
“I'm not going to talk about any individuals, obviously what I can tell you is the ambition of the club,” he said. “It's big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad in order to achieve that.
“We have obviously detected some areas that can be strengthened and that's what we are trying to do.”
The message is consistent: evolution, not complacency. A title and a Champions League final have raised the bar, not satisfied it.
On Sunday, against Manchester City at Wembley, Arsenal get their first look at how this new version of the champions stacks up. Arteta’s contract can wait. The next step in Arsenal’s rise cannot.
