Mike Solan Set to Lead Offaly Footballers as Senior Boss

Mike Solan is poised to take charge of the Offaly footballers, with the county’s management committee putting his name forward as the Faithful’s next senior boss.

The former Longford manager, who left that role earlier this month, will be presented for ratification at September’s county board meeting. If the clubs give the green light, Solan will step into a three-year term and inherit a panel searching for stability after another period of change on the line.

He will not be coming in alone. Solan’s proposed backroom team carries both experience and local clout. Joe Keane, who has coached Mayo, Sligo and Longford, is set to join him, bringing a strong track record on the training ground and in tactical preparation.

Alongside him, Offaly great Nigel Dunne is in line for a prominent role. Dunne, a key figure in the county’s recent underage revival, steered the Faithful minors to a landmark Leinster title in 2025 – their first provincial minor crown in 35 years. That success has sharpened expectations around what Offaly’s emerging talent can achieve at senior level.

Solan’s own CV is steeped in inter-county experience. Before his stint with Longford, he managed the Mayo Under-21s and later linked up with Andy Moran’s management team in Leitrim, adding another layer to his understanding of the modern inter-county game and the demands on developing squads.

He steps into a vacancy created when joint-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly resigned last month. Harte, who came on board in 2024 to work alongside Kelly, had weighed up staying on for another season. Kelly had already been in place from the previous year, but after discussions the pair ultimately chose to walk away.

Offaly now turn to Solan and his ticket, hoping that a three-year project, backed by proven coaching nous and a homegrown hero in Dunne, can finally turn promise into something more tangible on the championship stage.
