Michael Kayode Shines in Brentford's Victory Over Tottenham
Michael Kayode needed only a split second. That was enough to deepen the gloom around Roberto De Zerbi’s first Premier League outing in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout.
Three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Brentford already in command, the Italy U21 defender reacted quickest to a loose ball from the second phase of a corner. A scramble, a half-clearance, then Kayode darted into the right pocket of space and stabbed the ball home to make it 3-0, sending the home crowd into full celebration and Spurs into shock.
The damage had started well before his intervention. Keane Lewis-Potter struck in the first half to set Brentford on their way, and Vitaly Janelt doubled the lead before the interval, leaving De Zerbi’s side chasing shadows in their opening match of the 2026-27 Premier League season.
Kayode’s finish carried extra weight. It was only his second goal in the English top flight, following his first in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers back in March. Brentford clearly believe that won’t be his last. Earlier in the summer he signed a long-term contract extension, tying him to the Bees until 2032 and underlining his status as one of the club’s key projects for the future.
There was an unmistakable Italian subplot running through the afternoon. Kayode, the 22-year-old Italy U21 regular, struck against an Italian head coach in De Zerbi, with Italy international Sandro Tonali starting in the Tottenham midfield. One young Italian defender on the rise, another established Azzurri star trying to steady a listing side, and a compatriot on the touchline watching his Premier League debut for Spurs unravel.
Kayode has already collected 10 caps at U21 level, waiting patiently for that first senior call-up. Performances and moments like this, on opening day, in a dominant win, will not go unnoticed in Coverciano.
For Brentford, it was a statement start. For Kayode, it felt like the next step in a career that is accelerating fast.
