Mbappé Reaches Milestone as Real Madrid Defeats Inter in Champions League

Kylian Mbappé has started the 2026-27 season like a man in a hurry, and Europe felt it again on Tuesday night.

Five games. Five goals. This time the stage was the Champions League, and Inter Milan were the ones punished.

Real Madrid’s No. 9 needed just 14 minutes of the group-stage opener to leave his mark. Curtis Jones coughed up possession, Brahim Díaz pounced and slipped a sharp pass into space. Mbappé didn’t hesitate. One touch, first-time finish, low past Josep Martínez. Clinical. Inevitable.

That strike did more than tilt the tie Madrid’s way. It dragged Mbappé into elite company. Goal number 71 in the Champions League, drawing him level with Raúl on the all-time list and tying a legend of the club he now leads. Fifth place, shared for now.

The numbers tell you he is climbing, but they also show the size of the mountain still ahead. Cristiano Ronaldo sits alone at the summit with 140 goals in the competition, amassed during his spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. Mbappé, at 27, is only halfway there. The chase, though, is unmistakably on.

Madrid didn’t wait long to tighten their grip on the night.

Nine minutes after the opener, Federico Valverde turned pressure into a second goal. Martínez misjudged the situation, the ball spilled, and Valverde reacted faster than anyone. He poked it away from the goalkeeper and over the line, a scruffy finish that mattered just as much as Mbappé’s elegance.

At 2-0, the 15-time European champions looked in control, the Bernabéu crowd sensing a comfortable start to another continental campaign. Inter, though, refused to fold. They forced a late goal to make it 2-1 and inject tension into the closing stages, asking Madrid to show a different side: resilience.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team did exactly that. They absorbed the pressure, shut down the space and saw out the win to bank three points in their first match of the new Champions League season.

Mbappé walks away with another goal, another record touched, another reminder that this is now his era in Madrid. The question is no longer whether he belongs among the great European scorers.
