Matty Cash Eyes UEFA Super Cup Triumph as Aston Villa Prepares to Challenge Paris Saint-Germain
Matty Cash is confident that Aston Villa can build on last season’s achievements by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the upcoming UEFA Super Cup clash. The defender acknowledged the strength of the Champions League champions but emphasized Villa’s determination to claim another trophy at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.
European Giants Set to Battle for the Trophy
This match marks Villa’s second appearance in the UEFA Super Cup, where they will face off with Champions League winners PSG on Wednesday. Villa earned their place by winning the Europa League with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg, securing the club's first European title in 44 years. PSG, meanwhile, retained both their domestic league and the European Cup after beating Arsenal on penalties in May’s final.
Cash Praises PSG, Sees Opportunity for Villa
Speaking to the club’s official website, the Polish right-back described the game as a chance to complete the hard work done last season. He called PSG “the best team in the world by a mile” but remains optimistic about Villa’s chances.
“It’s massive. The manager has touched on it recently; the season is done, but you’ve still got the Super Cup, which is finishing off the work you did last season,” said Cash. “We’re against a fantastic team who are obviously in demand. Hopefully, we can give them a good game.”
He recalled their previous meeting in the Champions League where Villa gave PSG a tough challenge. “Villa Park was great that night, and hopefully we can take numbers to Austria and have a good go at it. It’s a special game for us. It’s another opportunity to go and win a trophy, so hopefully we can give it our all.”
Manager’s Influence and Club Ambitions
This will be the third encounter between these sides since their 2024-25 Champions League quarter-final, which PSG won 5-4 on aggregate. Unai Emery, Villa’s manager, has yet to win a Super Cup despite three previous attempts with Sevilla and Villarreal.
Cash praised Emery’s impact on Villa, noting the winning mindset he has instilled since arriving.
“Since the manager came in, he’s implemented what it’s like to win and what you have to do to win. Last year, we talked about winning the trophy, and for the past few years, we’ve been in the top four, top five, or top six consistently.”
The defender stressed Villa’s ambition to stay competitive in Europe and the league.
“We set the bar high, competing in Europe and doing well in the league, and I think it’s what everyone wants to do. If you’re always up there, you’re successful as a team and as a club. The levels we’re setting, the demands we’re putting on the group—you have to be there. When you’re winning things and always present, you want to stay there.”
Season Opener Provides Key Test
This Super Cup match offers a physical and tactical challenge ahead of Villa’s new Premier League season. The fixture also features a reunion with former Villa left-back Lucas Digne, who returned to PSG after his release clause was triggered.
