Mattie Pollock Faces Challenge as Watford Captain

Mattie Pollock has only just taken the armband at Watford, but he already sounds like a man carrying the weight of a restless club on his shoulders.

The Hornets slipped to a narrow defeat at West Brom on Saturday, a result that stretched their winless run to five games in all competitions and left them 18th in the early Championship table. The optimism of opening day, when they swept past Southampton to launch the 2026-27 campaign, feels a long way off.

Since that bright start, Watford have drawn two and lost two in the league. A heavily rotated side were also thrashed 5-1 by Peterborough in the EFL Cup last month. The slide has been sharp, and the mood around Vicarage Road has turned anxious.

Pollock, appointed captain in July, is refusing to let it fracture the dressing room.

"I'll do everything in my power to make sure the lads stick together," he told BBC Three Counties Radio, stressing unity as the only way out of the rut. "We came up short at the weekend, but if we can start scoring goals and winning games, then it can still be an exciting season."

The schedule offers no hiding place. Alessio Dionisi’s side host Preston at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night, then welcome Stoke City on Saturday. Two home games. Two chances to halt the drift. Two occasions when the crowd will make its feelings known.

"They're two massive games," Pollock admitted. "We've come up short in the last two away games, so we've got to make sure we put things right in front of our crowd and get the fans with us."

That is the challenge now. A captain trying to drag his team back into form, a squad searching for goals and belief, and a fanbase waiting to see whether this is just an early-season wobble or the shape of something more serious.
