Matteo Guendouzi Receives Four-Match Suspension for Brawl

Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match suspension in European competition – though half of that is suspended – and a 50,000-euro (£43,000) fine for his role in the ugly post-match brawl that followed the club’s Champions League play-off victory at Lyon.

The storm broke after Fenerbahce sealed a 3-2 aggregate win to reach the league stage. Tempers flared, bodies clashed and Uefa’s disciplinary arm has now come down hard.

Two of Guendouzi’s four games are suspended, with Uefa stating his punishment covers “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. Any repeat within the one-year probationary period will activate the full ban.

Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce’s English striker, has also been sanctioned. He receives a one-match suspended ban, again under a one-year probation, and a 30,000-euro (£26,000) fine for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”. He joined the Istanbul club in the summer after leaving Marseille, a direct rival of Lyon, adding another layer of tension to an already charged tie.

Lyon have not escaped scrutiny. Goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira has been given a five-match touchline ban, with two of those matches suspended, after what Uefa described as a “serious assault” during the post-game clashes.

Both clubs have also been fined 50,000 euros each for their teams “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”, a clear signal from European football’s governing body that the chaotic scenes in Lyon crossed a line it will not tolerate as the Champions League campaign gathers pace.
