Mason Greenwood Under UEFA Investigation After Fenerbahce vs Lyon Chaos
Mason Greenwood faces a fresh investigation from UEFA after Fenerbahce’s stormy Champions League play-off win over Lyon descended into chaos at the Groupama Stadium.
The Turkish club confirmed that European football’s governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Greenwood, team‑mate Matteo Guendouzi and Fenerbahce itself, following the ill-tempered second leg in France, which Fenerbahce won 2-1 at the end of August.
Tunnel chaos after final whistle
What should have been a night remembered for Fenerbahce’s progress was instead marred by ugly scenes once the final whistle went. Celebrations on the pitch quickly turned sour as tempers flared between players, staff and sections of the home support.
Greenwood is being investigated for his involvement in a post‑match confrontation, while Guendouzi is accused of provoking Lyon fans as he walked off the pitch at full-time. The flashpoints did not stop at the touchline. The dispute spilled into the tunnel, where bodies crowded together and emotions boiled over.
In the middle of the melee, a figure in what appeared to be a Lyon tracksuit emerged and seemed to launch a flying kick in the direction of Guendouzi. The incident only heightened the sense of disorder in the narrow confines beneath the stands.
On the pitch, Greenwood also found himself surrounded by chaos as several Lyon supporters tried to push towards the playing area during Fenerbahce’s celebrations. Stewards and staff moved to contain the situation as the atmosphere turned poisonous.
UEFA steps in
Fenerbahce later confirmed UEFA had formally intervened.
“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club," the club said in a statement.
“Our Club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce. All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We present this to the public for information."
The case will now move through UEFA’s disciplinary channels, with sanctions possible for the players and the club depending on the findings.
Guendouzi: “That really gets to you”
Guendouzi later gave his version of events, focusing on the abuse he says he received from the stands long before the confrontation erupted.
“You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children – even before the match – and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet," he said.
“Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes – even longer if you count the warm-up – they were insulting my family.
“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful.”
Head coach Ismail Kartal made it clear the dressing room stood firmly behind the France international.
“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about.”
Greenwood’s new chapter under scrutiny
For Greenwood, the investigation comes just as his on-field story with Fenerbahce had started to gather pace. The former Manchester United forward played his part as the club reached the Champions League main draw for the first time since 2009, a significant milestone for the Istanbul giants.
Fenerbahce now prepare for a demanding league phase, where they will face AS Roma, Aston Villa, Slavia Praha, Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. It is a schedule loaded with high-profile nights and unforgiving scrutiny.
With United also back in the competition, the possibility remains – at least on paper – that Greenwood could one day line up against his former club, but only if both sides progress through the new-format league stage.
Greenwood joined Fenerbahce from Marseille on a four‑year deal in July. His future on the pitch looks busy enough. Off it, UEFA’s verdict now looms over the early chapters of his career in Turkey.
