Martin Sherif Charged with Betting Breaches by FA
Martin Sherif has been charged by the Football Association over an alleged series of betting breaches, placing the young Everton forward’s career under serious threat before it has even begun at senior level.
The Daily Mail revealed on Wednesday that the 19-year-old is accused of placing 61 bets on football matches across a 15‑month spell, from 20 November 2024 to 12 February 2026, in direct violation of strict gambling regulations.
The FA later confirmed the charges with a detailed statement, naming the Everton player and outlining the alleged rule breach.
“Martin Sherif of Everton FC has been charged with breaching the FA's betting rules. It's alleged that the player breached FA Rule E1.2 in respect of 61 bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. Martin Sherif has until Monday 17 August to provide a response.”
That deadline now looms over a player still trying to establish himself in the professional game.
A career halted before take-off
Sherif has been on Everton’s books since the age of 13, rising through the academy and training with the first team, but he has yet to make a competitive appearance for the senior side. To accelerate his development, the club sent him out on loan last season in search of regular minutes and the rough edges of real senior football.
He joined Rotherham United in League One, where he scored two goals in 10 league outings. The spell showed promise but ended early in December after injuries cut short his time at the New York Stadium.
The response was swift. In February, Sherif moved again, this time to Port Vale. He featured regularly, playing 17 times and scoring twice, but could not prevent Vale’s slide into relegation to League Two. It was a harsh lesson in the unforgiving nature of the lower leagues.
Now his education has taken a far more serious turn.
Everton stay silent in public, active in private
Everton have not yet issued a public statement on the FA’s charges. No official comment, no formal defence in the open. Behind the scenes, though, the club is already moving.
According to The Athletic, a source close to Everton has indicated the club intends to handle the matter internally while fully cooperating with the FA. The same source stressed that Sherif will receive support from the club throughout the disciplinary process.
That support will be crucial. English football’s betting rules are explicit: players are banned from betting on any football match anywhere in the world. The regulations exist to protect the integrity of the sport and the trust that underpins every result, every performance, every league table.
Sherif must now work with Everton and his legal team to prepare a formal response to the charges before Monday’s deadline.
Facing a potentially career-defining verdict
The stakes are high. If an independent commission finds Sherif guilty of breaching FA Rule E1.2, he could face a lengthy suspension from all football activities. Recent years have shown how severe such punishments can be for betting offences, with players sidelined for months or even longer.
