Marseille Pursue Late Move for Arsenal Goalkeeper Illan Meslier
Marseille have moved onto alert for Illan Meslier’s situation at Arsenal and are weighing up a late raid for the French goalkeeper before the transfer window closes, according to reports in France.
Meslier only arrived at the Emirates last month. He ran down his contract at Leeds United and joined the Premier League champions on a free, signed as back-up to David Raya. Arsenal handed him a two-year deal, keeping him in north London until June 2028, a fresh start after a turbulent final year at Elland Road.
For six seasons in Yorkshire, Meslier was a constant. He made 215 appearances in all competitions for Leeds and stood behind two promotion campaigns to the Premier League, in 2020 and again in 2025. At 26, he should be entering his peak.
Instead, his career stalled. Daniel Farke froze him out of the Leeds squad last season, and Meslier has not played a competitive minute since March 2025. The rust has been building.
A move to Arsenal promised a reset, but reality has been harsher. Meslier featured only as a substitute in pre-season friendlies against Girona, Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. When the matches started to matter, he disappeared from the teamsheet. Kepa Arrizabalaga, not Meslier, took the spot on the bench for the Community Shield and Friday’s league win over Coventry.
That pecking order has not gone unnoticed. Foot Mercato reports that Marseille view Meslier’s “precarious situation” as an opportunity and are considering a surprise late push to bring him back to Ligue 1.
Goalkeeper hunt in Marseille
Bruno Genesio’s side are scouring the market for cover and competition for first-choice Jeffrey de Lange while the window remains open. Behind De Lange, the depth is thin. Very thin.
Jelle Van Neck and Theo Vermot are on the books, but neither has made a first-team appearance for the club. For a team with Champions League ambitions and a demanding home crowd, that is a risk.
Meslier has emerged as one of Marseille’s “top targets” for the position. Despite his lack of recent game time, club officials are said to be “very impressed” by his profile: tall, experienced in a high-pressure league, and still young enough to grow.
There is a catch. The report underlines that Marseille may first need to trim their squad and cut the wage bill before any move becomes concrete. Outgoings must pave the way for a formal offer to Arsenal.
Meslier’s Arsenal dream
Meslier arrived in London talking like a man ready to fight for his place. After signing, he described himself as “extremely happy” and “very proud” to join the champions, calling Arsenal “the biggest club in England”.
He spoke of his desire to show his love for the badge and to help the club “win trophies again and again”. The language was ambitious, the tone hungry. Yet within weeks, he finds himself third choice and the subject of transfer talk again.
Arsenal’s summer business has only sharpened the competition. Alongside Meslier, the Gunners have bolstered a title-winning squad with Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa. They also triggered their £35 million option to sign Piero Hincapie permanently after his loan from Bayer Leverkusen.
At the same time, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, Christian Norgaard and Karl Hein have been allowed to leave, a reminder that status at Arsenal can change quickly.
Now Meslier stands at another crossroads. Stay and fight for a place behind Raya and Kepa, or jump at the chance of a leading role in Marseille, where the No. 1 shirt looks far more attainable?
With the window ticking down and Marseille juggling finances, the next few days will tell whether this is just interest on paper or the start of a genuine escape route for a goalkeeper who needs games, not promises.
