Marcus Rashford Returns to Manchester United Spotlight Against AC Milan

Marcus Rashford is back in the Manchester United spotlight – and the timing could hardly be sharper.

Michael Carrick has named the winger in his travelling squad to face AC Milan in Wroclaw this afternoon, a routine pre-season date on paper that carries a heavy layer of subtext after Ruben Amorim’s summer arrival at San Siro.

This is not just another friendly. Not for Rashford. Not after what happened under Amorim at Old Trafford.

A fractured past with Amorim

Amorim’s short and sour spell in charge of United was defined, in part, by his breakdown with Rashford. The relationship collapsed in December 2024, when the then-United boss dropped the forward for the Manchester derby and then banished him from first-team training.

It felt final. It looked like the end of Rashford’s United career.

By January, the club had moved him on. Rashford joined Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the season, a stark fall from being one of United’s standard-bearers to a temporary solution elsewhere.

When he came back, the picture did not soften. Rashford was placed in a so‑called “Bomb Squad” group, training away from the core squad, and then shipped out again – this time to Barcelona on a season-long loan.

Barcelona, a buy clause, and a twist

Spain was supposed to be the clean break. A fresh league, a new environment, a chance to reset away from the Old Trafford glare while Amorim still held the reins.

Instead, the ground shifted beneath him.

During Rashford’s stint at Barcelona, United pulled the plug on Amorim’s tenure and turned to Michael Carrick. The managerial change reopened a door many assumed had been slammed shut.

Even then, the expectation was clear: Rashford would make his Barcelona move permanent. The Catalan club had a £26m buy clause in place and the forward’s future seemed mapped out.

Then came another turn. Barcelona walked away from the option and chose to sign Anthony Gordon instead. Rashford, once again, was heading back to Manchester with questions swirling around his next chapter.

Back in United colours – and in the fans’ plans

After the World Cup, Rashford reported back to United and spent this week in Dublin with the squad. He watched on as others featured against Leeds; Carrick kept him in reserve.

Now, the new manager has made his first clear move. Rashford is on the plane to Poland and in the group to face AC Milan – and, by extension, Amorim.

Supporters have already made their feelings known. Asked by MEN Sport whether Rashford should play against Milan on Saturday, United fans responded in huge numbers.

Of 2,799 votes cast at the time of writing, a commanding 84 per cent said “Yes”. Only 13 per cent were against the idea, with three per cent unsure. For a player whose United future has been repeatedly questioned, that is a resounding show of faith.

Not the only one with a point to prove

Rashford will not be alone in carrying emotional baggage into this fixture. Kobbie Mainoo, another who endured a difficult spell under Amorim, is also in Carrick’s travelling squad.

There is also room for excitement. Teenage forward JJ Gabriel, the latest academy name to catch the eye, has been handed another opportunity with the first team and will look to strengthen his case in front of Carrick and his staff.

So a pre-season game in Wroclaw suddenly crackles with narrative. Amorim in the opposite dugout. Rashford back in United colours, backed loudly by the fans, and walking straight into a reunion with the coach who froze him out.

Carrick has brought him to the stage. The only question now is how big a role Rashford is about to reclaim.
