Marc Guiu Joins RB Leipzig from Chelsea
Chelsea have agreed to sell Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig in a permanent deal, drawing a sudden line under the Spanish striker’s brief and curious spell at Stamford Bridge.
The agreement was struck away from the usual transfer noise. Talks between Chelsea and Leipzig stayed out of the spotlight until late on Friday, when Fabrizio Romano broke cover with his trademark “here we go”, confirming the move was complete on both player and club side.
Guiu will now head to Germany to finalise the switch before the window shuts. The deal includes a sell-on clause for Chelsea, though the exact fee remains under wraps. It closes a chapter that began only in July 2024, when Chelsea plucked him from Barcelona.
From La Masia hope to Chelsea stopgap
Chelsea had gone to Barcelona to trigger Guiu’s €6 million release clause, gambling on a La Masia striker who had already made a splash in Spain. He scored on his Barcelona first-team debut against Athletic Club in October 2023 and later found the net in the Champions League, hinting at a ruthless edge in front of goal.
At Chelsea, those instincts flashed but never fully took root.
Guiu made the most of his scattered chances. He hit a first-half hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers in the 2024-25 UEFA Conference League and added another goal against Ajax in the Champions League. When the ball fell his way, he usually did the rest. The problem was how rarely that happened in the Premier League pecking order.
Regular league minutes stayed out of reach. He slipped into the role so many young forwards know too well at big clubs: useful, promising, but never quite trusted as the main option.
Chelsea tried to change that with a loan move to Sunderland in August 2025. It barely got started. An injury to Liam Delap forced Chelsea into an early recall, and Guiu returned to west London to provide cover rather than to lead the line. He collected more appearances, but not the status of a regular starter.
Alonso era closes the door
The picture sharpened at the start of the 2026-27 season under new head coach Xabi Alonso. Chelsea reshaped their attack, brought in fresh competition and trimmed the squad. In that reshuffle, Guiu did not even receive a squad number.
The message was blunt. Chelsea were moving on.
Behind the scenes, the club set their terms. They had previously asked for around €25 million when speaking to other sides and insisted on a sell-on clause in any deal. Napoli pushed hardest, reportedly reaching personal terms with Guiu, but never bridged the gap in valuation with Chelsea. Manchester City watched developments, while Sevilla explored a loan that would have taken him back to Spain.
None of those options stuck. Leipzig did.
Leipzig move offers reset in the Bundesliga
RB Leipzig have built a reputation on exactly this kind of move: young, talented forwards given a clear pathway and real minutes in the Bundesliga. Guiu, standing at 1.89m, brings power, aerial threat and penalty-box presence to a club that knows how to polish rough edges.
For Chelsea, the transfer delivers a financial return and preserves upside through the sell-on clause. For Guiu, it offers something he never truly had in England — the chance to grow into a regular senior starter rather than fight for scraps behind established names.
Romano summed up the deal on social media: Leipzig closed the agreement after “secret talks and zero links”, with everything settled on both sides and the player set to travel. The move will only become official once Guiu completes his medical and signs his contract, but the direction of travel is clear.
One year after leaving Barcelona for a bold Premier League leap, Guiu now takes another. This time, to a club built around turning potential into production.
