Marc Guiu Joins RB Leipzig on Long-Term Deal
RB Leipzig have moved decisively in the market, landing Spanish centre-forward Marc Guiu from Chelsea on a long-term deal running until June 2031 – a clear statement of intent and a calculated bet on raw, restless talent.
The transfer ends a summer of noise around the 18-year-old’s future. Clubs across Europe circled, weighed up his situation and waited for an opening. Leipzig didn’t wait. They sold him a project, a role, a pathway – and won the race.
“Joining RB Leipzig is exactly the right step for me. The club made a real effort to bring me here and, in our talks, gave me a clear idea of the role I can play in the team," Guiu said, sounding like a player who finally knows where he fits.
From Barcelona prodigy to Premier League bottleneck
Guiu’s rise has been fast, and at times chaotic. He broke through at Barcelona at just 17, one of those La Masia forwards who seem to arrive with a spotlight already attached. When Chelsea swooped in 2024, it felt like a coup – a classic Premier League raid on Barça’s next big thing.
Reality bit quickly.
Chelsea’s swollen squad left him fighting for scraps. Starts were rare, rhythm almost impossible. He still managed to flash his potential in Europe, especially in the Conference League, where the tempo and open spaces suited his direct, penalty-box style.
But with Chelsea under pressure to trim numbers and raise funds to stay on the right side of financial rules, a sale stopped being a hypothetical. It became the sensible outcome for everyone: money for Chelsea, minutes and clarity for Guiu, a key piece for Leipzig.
His brief loan to Sunderland underlined the instability of his time in England. That spell was cut short in under a month as injuries at Chelsea forced a recall, another jolt in a career that had already lurched between opportunity and interruption.
Leipzig’s plan, not a panic
Inside Leipzig, this was no opportunistic swoop. Managing Director for Sport Marcel Schäfer made it clear: Guiu was not a late-window scramble to plug a gap up front, but a long-targeted replacement for outgoing forwards.
“Marc is a very good fit for our RB DNA with his intensity, pace and incredible work rate. He’s relentless in his work without the ball, while he’s also a real presence in the box and is always looking to get at goal," Schäfer said, outlining a profile that could have been lifted straight from the club’s playbook.
Leipzig had tracked him closely since he left La Masia, following each twist of his development. “We’ve been in contact with him for a long time and have followed his development very closely, so we’re delighted that he has chosen RB Leipzig. We’re convinced he has the quality and mentality to make an immediate impact, while he still has plenty of room to develop further,” Schäfer added.
That blend – impact now, upside later – is exactly what Leipzig have built their identity on.
A calculated step into the Bundesliga
For Guiu, this move is not another leap into the unknown. It’s a deliberate choice. After Barcelona and Chelsea, he now joins a club that has made a habit of turning potential into finished products and selling them to the very elite he’s already brushed shoulders with.
He knows that history. He has watched forwards grow within the Red Bull system and move on as established stars. That pathway is part of the attraction.
