Manchester United Teen Prodigy JJ Gabriel Requests Departure
Manchester United have been jolted by the shock news that 15-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel has formally asked to leave the club – on the eve of what was expected to be his first involvement with the senior squad.
The teenager was in line to be included in the matchday group for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton at Old Trafford, a step that could have made him the youngest player in United’s history. Instead, the club have been informed he wants his registration cancelled.
Inside Carrington, the mood is one of disbelief. Senior figures are said to be baffled by the decision and convinced they have done everything possible to convince Gabriel and his family that a clear route to the first team exists.
That effort has gone far beyond routine academy meetings. Gabriel and his family have held talks with Ruben Amorim during the Portuguese’s time as head coach, and even with Sir Alex Ferguson, as United tried to underline how highly they rate the north London-born forward and how carefully they are managing his development.
For now, United believe the situation can still be turned around. With time left on his contract, club officials insist Gabriel cannot simply deregister himself, despite his request. They say he is tied to United until the end of the season and remains their player.
Because of his age, Gabriel cannot sign professional terms until he turns 17 in October 2025, though he will be eligible to agree a scholarship when he reaches 16. That leaves a delicate window in which United must convince him to stay, while knowing other elite clubs are watching closely.
Gabriel has been on United’s books since the age of 11 and has rapidly become one of the most talked-about talents at Carrington. He has scored heavily at every age group, including a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut against Sabah last week, and regularly plays above his age bracket.
Last season he hit 26 goals in 29 games for the youth sides, form that earned him two caps for England Under-17s and United’s prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award – the club’s standout accolade for emerging talent. He has also trained frequently with the first team, another signal of how quickly he has climbed the internal ladder.
Speaking after that 5-0 Youth League win over Sabah, United’s lead under-21 coach Adam Lawrence underlined just how much faith the club have placed in the teenager.
“JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through,” Lawrence said. “He’s been at the club for so long. He’s got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well.
“At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it’s about making sure that he’s getting the right exposure across different levels. We’re obviously not perfect but it’s definitely something we put a lot of thought into.”
Those words now hang over an uncertain future. Barcelona and Manchester City have both been linked with Gabriel in the past, after reports last year that his family were considering a move.
United, who believed they were on the verge of handing him a landmark first-team experience, must now fight to keep hold of one of the brightest prospects their academy has produced in years.
