Manchester United Targets Alejandro Balde for Left-Back Role
Manchester United have turned their attention to Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde as they step up plans to recruit a new left-back.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have made contact with Balde’s camp in recent days to explore whether a move away from the La Liga champions could be prised open, and on what terms.
The 21-year-old’s situation at Barcelona has grown more complicated over the past year. An injury-hit 2025/26 campaign stalled his momentum just as he looked set to cement himself as first choice on the left of defence.
Then came another twist. João Cancelo, initially a short-term fix, forced his way to the front of the queue under Hansi Flick during the second half of last season. The Portuguese full-back’s permanent return this week has pushed Balde back towards a supporting role, with the prospect of a year as understudy now looming.
That shift has not gone unnoticed in England. United, fresh from wrapping up a deal for Carlos Baleba, have made a new left-back their next priority. Romano states: “Manchester United keep looking for new left back, next priority after Baleba deal. There have been calls with Alejandro Balde's camp over last days to understand if exit is possible and conditions.”
The approach is at an early stage. No agreement, no green light. Just a big club testing the door.
Barcelona’s stance adds another layer. After Balde’s disrupted season, suggestions have surfaced that the club could consider a sale at the right price, a notable change from the period when he was viewed as untouchable in their long-term plans.
Yet there is a counterweight: the player himself. Balde is understood to be happy at Barcelona and settled at the Spotify Camp Nou, hardly pushing for the exit.
So United are left with a familiar challenge. They want a dynamic, modern left-back. They have identified one at a European giant. But can they tempt both club and player to break a partnership that, not so long ago, looked built for the future?
