Manchester United Targeting Mateus Fernandes for Midfield Reinforcement

Manchester United are closing in on their next major midfield move – and the spotlight has swung firmly onto Mateus Fernandes.

The 21-year-old West Ham United midfielder, recently relegated to the Championship, has surged to the top of United’s summer shortlist as INEOS reshapes the club’s transfer strategy.

From Anderson to Fernandes

The plan had been different. Elliot Anderson was heavily monitored, but Nottingham Forest’s £130million asking price killed that pursuit stone dead.

At 7:59am on June 11, Manchester Evening News’ chief United correspondent Tyrone Marshall spelled out the new reality on X: United are “unwilling to pay £120million for Elliot Anderson and won’t be drawn into a bidding war.” The message from Old Trafford is clear: they want value, they want players who genuinely want the move, and they have turned their gaze elsewhere.

Top of that new list? Mateus Fernandes.

Talks underway, bid in the works

Fabrizio Romano has now added weight to the story. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian reporter revealed that Manchester United are already in “official contact” with the player’s representatives and have “started the conversation with the agent to start preparing a bid to West Ham.”

This is not a vague enquiry. Romano insists United are “for sure in conversations with Mateus Fernandes,” with a formal offer being lined up.

The race, though, is not theirs alone. Romano flagged that “more clubs” are circling, naming Real Madrid among the sides attentive to the situation. An “interesting race,” as he put it, is beginning to take shape around a 21-year-old whose stock has risen sharply despite West Ham’s drop into the second tier.

A crowded field of elite suitors

TalkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs has backed up the picture of serious movement. Posting on X at 3:43pm on June 11, he reported that “movement [is] expected on Mateus Fernandes’ future this month,” confirming that Manchester United are “already in talks on the player side.”

They are not alone. Jacobs listed PSG and Arsenal as clubs who “hold appreciation” for the midfielder, while Real Madrid are described as the “latest suitor to make contact.”

For a player whose club has just been relegated, this is elite company. It also gives West Ham leverage.

West Ham’s price – and United’s calculation

West Ham paid £38m plus £4m in add-ons for Fernandes, and they intend to cash in hard. Jacobs reports that the London club want double that outlay. Romano has gone further, stating on June 8 that West Ham fixed a price tag of £85m in a meeting with the player’s camp.

That figure instantly frames the negotiation. United have already walked away from one inflated valuation this summer. The question now is whether they see Fernandes as the kind of cornerstone midfielder worth pushing towards the upper limit of their budget.

The Bruno factor and United’s midfield rebuild

There is another pull in United’s favour. TEAMtalk reported on May 14 that Fernandes is “extremely keen” on a move to Old Trafford. He is also said to be attracted by the chance to line up alongside his Portugal international teammate Bruno Fernandes in the heart of United’s midfield.

United, for their part, are not building around a single signing. They already have an agreement in place with Atalanta for Ederson Silva, underlining a clear intent to overhaul the engine room in one summer.

If they can pair Ederson with Mateus Fernandes, United’s midfield could look radically different by the start of next season: younger, more dynamic, and far closer to the aggressive, front-foot profile INEOS want.

For now, the lines are drawn. United are in talks, a bid is being prepared, West Ham’s price is set, and Europe’s giants are watching the same player.
