Manchester United Target Liverpool's Vincent Joseph as Academy Rivalry Heats Up
The transfer line between Manchester United and Liverpool has been stone cold for more than 60 years. Senior players do not cross that divide anymore. Not directly.
But the academies are a different story. That’s where the old rivalry still prowls in the shadows.
United have done it before. In 2021 they persuaded winger Ethan Ennis to walk away from a contract offer at Liverpool and head down the M62 to Carrington. Ennis is still on United’s books, learning the hard way through loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town.
Now, United are back at Liverpool’s door.
United move for Vincent Joseph
This time the name on their list is Vincent Joseph.
According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice in youth football circles, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker “looks set to leave” Anfield after being left out of the club’s latest announcement of scholars. For a player of his profile, that omission speaks loudly.
United, The Secret Scout reports, “hold strong interest” in Joseph. Scouts have been impressed by his blend of physical power and sharp link-up play, a combination that already marks him out as a genuine No 9 at youth level rather than a winger repurposed through necessity.
The competition is serious. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts to watch him several times, underlining how quickly his reputation has spread across Europe’s elite talent market.
Joseph already has England U16 caps and has tasted the U18 Premier League, where he made only two appearances last season but still managed three goals. That return, in limited minutes, is exactly the kind of signal clubs at the top end of the game look for: a teenager stepping up an age group and still finding the net.
The Secret Scout summed up the mood around him: “Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand.”
That line cuts to the heart of the chase. Top-class centre-forwards are scarce. When one shows promise at 16, the scramble begins early.
Bayern, United also tracking Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong
Joseph is not the only teenager drawing admiring glances from Old Trafford and Bavaria.
United and Bayern are also among the clubs monitoring Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old, a towering presence at the back, has been flagged as a player of serious long-term potential.
Recent reporting relayed by The Peoples Person claimed Acheampong has made it onto United’s radar, fitting the profile of the physically imposing, modern defender capable of growing into a first-team role.
Chelsea, though, are not playing ball. The London club are understood to have rejected approaches from several unnamed sides and currently view Acheampong as “untouchable.” For now, any move for him looks more like a long-term ambition than an imminent deal.
INEOS blueprint: marquee names and tomorrow’s core
Much of the noise around INEOS and the new football structure at United has focused on big names and Champions League nights. With qualification secured, the expectation has been for headline signings, the kind that light up back pages and shirt sales.
Yet the pursuit of Joseph, the interest in Acheampong, and the earlier move for Ennis all point to a parallel strategy. United are not just chasing the next star of today; they are quietly trying to corner the market on the stars of tomorrow.
This is the battleground now: not just the transfer window, but the academy lists and scholar announcements, the 16-year-olds left off one document and quickly added to another.
If United do prise Vincent Joseph away from Liverpool, it will not carry the shock of a senior player crossing the divide. It will, however, send a clear message about where they intend to win their next great rivalry: at the very start of a career, before a teenager has even played in front of a packed Premier League crowd.
