Manchester United Target Manu Kone After Tchouameni Commitment

Manchester United have seen their midfield “dream” disappear into the Madrid night. Now, their gaze has snapped back to a more attainable – but still high‑calibre – target: Manu Kone.

Tchouameni off the table, United change lane

At Old Trafford, Aurelien Tchouameni was viewed as the ideal heir to Casemiro. Younger, already hardened at the top level, and trusted at Real Madrid, he ticked every box for the INEOS hierarchy as they mapped out a new core for Michael Carrick’s side.

Optimism had quietly grown that Madrid might cash in. The European champions have been heavily linked with big-money moves for the likes of Rodri and Enzo Fernandez, and there was a feeling in Manchester that a major midfield signing in Spain could open the door for Tchouameni’s exit.

That door has now been slammed shut.

After talks with Jose Mourinho – poised for a dramatic return to the Bernabeu 13 years after his first spell – Tchouameni has committed his long-term future to Madrid. Any faint hope United had of prising him away has vanished with that new contract.

Behind the scenes, there is a sense that the player’s agent, who also represents Manu Kone, used the Premier League interest to strengthen his client’s position in Madrid. Reputable voices insist a transfer might genuinely have been on the table had Madrid chosen to sell, but once Mourinho’s stance became clear, the opportunity died.

What survived, however, was a name already in United’s files.

Kone pushed to the front of the queue

With Tchouameni locked in, United have pivoted decisively towards Kone, his teammate from France’s World Cup squad and a midfielder cut from a similar cloth.

According to TEAMtalk, United are now “plotting a move” after learning of Roma’s £50 million valuation of the 25‑year‑old. That figure is not arbitrary. Roma, even with the cushion of a third-place finish in Serie A and Champions League football secured, need to move players on to stay on the right side of UEFA’s financial rules.

Inside the Stadio Olimpico, Kone is viewed as the most valuable saleable asset. The kind of player whose departure hurts on the pitch but balances the books off it.

The report suggests intermediaries have already sounded out a cluster of English heavyweights: Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been approached as potential destinations. It is the usual Premier League feeding frenzy, but this time United are not merely one of many. They are one of the clubs most actively engaged.

Kone, for his part, is understood to be open to the move. Previous reporting relayed by The Peoples Person described him as “very keen” on a switch to Old Trafford. For a club trying to rebuild its identity, that willingness matters.

Built for England, trusted by France

On the pitch, Kone looks tailor-made for the Premier League. At 6ft 1in, he brings the physical presence English football still demands in central areas. He relishes duels, wins his share of them, and then drives forward with the ball at his feet. That blend of bite and ball-carrying is precisely what United’s midfield has lacked in too many high-intensity games.

His performances at the World Cup only amplified his reputation. The tournament showcased his athleticism and technical poise on the biggest stage, underlining why scouts across Europe have tracked his progress so closely.

One moment in particular will not have gone unnoticed at Carrington. In France’s 3-0 win over Iraq in the group stage, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, who missed out with an adductor problem. Didier Deschamps trusted him to step into that role without disrupting the balance of the side.

United appear ready to follow that same logic: if Kone is good enough to mirror Tchouameni for France, he is good enough to be considered as an alternative to him in Manchester.

INEOS weigh up their “serious option”

The agent overlap between Tchouameni and Kone has ensured Roma’s midfielder featured prominently in recent discussions with INEOS. TEAMtalk even reports that the new United leadership have been made aware of Eduardo Camavinga’s potential availability from Madrid, another high-profile name in that same midfield bracket.

Yet the preference, at this stage, is said to be clear. Kone is viewed as a “serious option” to strengthen Carrick’s engine room – a realistic, attainable target who fits the tactical and financial profile of the new regime.

Roma’s need to sell, Kone’s appetite for the Premier League, and United’s renewed urgency after losing out on Tchouameni have all converged.

The dream signing has gone. The question now is whether United move decisively enough to ensure their Plan B becomes the cornerstone of a new midfield, rather than another name they watch flourish somewhere else.
