Manchester United's Chance to Reunite Haaland and Sorloth in Manchester
Manchester United have been handed the chance to bring Erling Haaland’s close friend Alexander Sorloth back to the Premier League – and into the same city as the Manchester City striker – with intermediaries putting the Atletico Madrid forward on the table before Tuesday’s deadline.
United sources indicate Sorloth has moved firmly into the frame as the club accelerates its search for another centre-forward in the final days of the window. The Norway international is open to leaving Atletico this summer, and the idea of a Premier League return appeals to the 30-year-old after his previous spell with Crystal Palace.
United’s need is clear. Joshua Zirkzee has been allowed to join Fiorentina, leaving Michael Carrick and the recruitment team scrambling for a new option to support Benjamin Sesko. The brief is specific: if a striker arrives, he must be a genuine central focal point, not a wide forward forced inside. Sorloth ticks that box.
Powerful, dominant in the air and with prior experience of English football, the Norwegian has impressed since his move to Atletico. Across his career he has racked up 175 goals in 475 matches, numbers that have not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford as they weigh up short- and medium-term solutions.
Atletico, though, will not simply open the exit door. The Spanish club are prepared to let Sorloth go, but only once they have a replacement lined up. They intend to keep Julian Alvarez, yet still want another striker in the building. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and former Lille forward Jonathan David are among the names under consideration.
Juventus are also in that crowded striker market. They are exploring a move for David that could evolve into a complex exchange, with Sorloth and Nico Gonzalez potentially involved in a multi-player deal. Those talks are proving anything but straightforward, adding another twist to Sorloth’s situation.
United, for their part, have also been offered David and are studying whether the Canada international fits the profile they want as another attacking solution. He is one of several options being tracked as the club resist the temptation to panic-buy.
Shortlist grows as deadline looms
The list is long, the time is short. United have already held conversations with Crystal Palace over Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, though both deals are described as complicated on fee and structure.
Younger, developmental forwards have also been pushed into discussions. Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic, Hoffenheim’s Fisnik Asllani and RB Leipzig’s Conrad Harder have all been looked at as potential projects rather than instant starters.
Sorloth, though, brings something different: age, experience, and a proven physical profile. His openness to a return to England, combined with Atletico’s conditional willingness to sell, makes this one of the more realistic late-window stories to monitor.
There is another layer. Sorloth’s close relationship with Haaland adds a fascinating subplot to the possibility of the two Norwegians sharing Manchester, even if they would be split by the city’s fierce divide.
Inside Old Trafford, the message remains consistent. United will only move if the forward truly complements Sesko and elevates Carrick’s options. If the right profile does not emerge in these final days, there is a real chance they walk away from the market altogether.
